Streaming Services are Underrated & Here’s Why

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Wyoming chapter.

If you’re like me… and almost everyone in the United States… you probably have a Netflix account. You have watched movies like “Sierra Burgess is a Loser” and “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.” You’ve binge watched shows like “The Office” and “Jane The Virgin.”

First, we’ve got the Big 4: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Youtube TV.

The only disadvantage of streaming services? The outrageous price you need to pay. Netflix charges around $8 for one screen, and up to $12 for 4 screens playing simultaneously. The Hulu streaming library sits at $8 a month, and up to $40 a month with added Live TV. YouTubeTV also sits at $40 a month for the Live TV benefits.

Amazon Prime Student is probably the best deal out there. Users only have to pay $59 a month, which includes the Prime Video and free 2-Day shipping, and it also has a 6-month trial period. And the benefits for Prime Day are insane!

Here are four reasons why streaming services are completely underrated, and why you need to look in to these sweet deals.

1. Binge-Worthiness

Whether it be watching “The Office” episodes five times over, or binging new shows that Netflix introduces, you’ve got to admit it: streaming services give us all a treat and provide a great opportunity to waste time.

Also, to procrastinate. I could be writing my 20-page paper for my group project in Advanced Communication Theory, but instead I want to watch the finale episode of “The Office.”

2. I’m in it for the Movies

I recently started using my Amazon Prime account benefits, watching Prime video. They have the entire Twilight series on there.

My inner 13-year-old self is squealing as I re-watch the steamy vampire drama.

The Thursday Night Football perk is also a plus.

3. YouTube TV beats cable 100%.

The benefits of YouTubeTV are amazing. We don’t have a cable plan at my house, so how am I supposed to indulge in new series shown on TV?

A new series that I’ve gotten involved in is “New Amsterdam” on NBC. 10/10, would recommend. I’m not going to spoil it (promptly because it only has one season so far). But let’s just say it falls in the same category of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “The Good Doctor”… dramatic, tear-inspiring, and amazing.

YouTubeTV also shows football games that air on TV, which is great because now I have an excuse not to go downtown just to watch football.

4. Additional Benefits.

Blockbuster movies show up on Netflix every month, and new shows appear for viewers to begin binge watching.

Hulu viewers can watch HBO. We’re STILL WAITING for Game of Thrones. Shows that normally air on NBC are also on there. Viewers can binge on shows such as “Project Runway,” “America’s Next Top Model,” or “The Voice.”

Now get out there and unintentionally waste your valuable time while streaming!

“Sometimes you want to have a very productive Saturday to feel that you are in control of your life, which of course you are not.” -Tina Fey, Bossypants Jamie Bridenstine... How do I even begin to explain Jamie Bridenstine. Jamie Bridenstine is flawless. She has two Fendi purses and a silver Lexus. I hear her hair's insured for $10,000. I hear she does car commercials... in Japan. Her favorite movie is Varsity Blues. One time, she met John Stamos on a plane. And he told her she was pretty. One time, she punched me in the face. It was awesome. Jamie Bridenstine is a 4th year undergrad at the University of Wyoming, earning her B.A. in Communication and a minor in Military Science. Her favorite move is Mean Girls... and any movie with Tina Fey in it. She enjoys deep conversations about politics, procrastinating on group projects, and watching The Office over and over again. Jamie has the cutest dog in the world, Timber, and is ready to take on the world after college. She will be heading up to Washington after graduation to pursue her career in the military... and hopefully her graduate degree in Public Relations.
