Meet HC Wyoming: Bailey Johnson

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Wyoming chapter.

Name: Bailey Johnson

Major: Graphic Design

Class Standing: Freshman

Role in HC: Writer

Why did you join HC?

I saw an HC recruitment flyer while passing through the union one day and with it being my first year here at UW, I was ecstatic to find an opportunity that aligned with my interests and gave me the opportunity to meet new people. Joining HC provides me the ability to exercise my writing skills in a fun and stress-free way.

What do you love about HC?

I am really in love with the community behind HC; my fellow members are all awesome and supportive people who keep open minds about various ideas.

What’s the most valuable piece of advice you’ve received?

I honestly can’t remember anything specific, but I’ll always remember the tidbits of advice that my very first piano teacher gave me. She always encouraged me to pursue my dreams, ignite my passions and become a strong, independent woman who doesn’t need a man to make her feel validation. Literally, though, she told me that if I let a guy come into my life and mess up my goals and plans, she would personally come from wherever she was and kick my butt.

What fictional place would you most love to visit?

Hogwarts. This Hufflepuff is wanting to cast spells, meet magical creatures, and win the Quidditch cup for the house of the badger!

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

I would definitely want the ability to shapeshift into any animal of my choosing. I mean c’mon, then I could fly, breathe underwater, be super fast, be super strong, etc…The possibilities are literally endless.

Are you usually early or late?

Late. Always. No matter how hard I try.

Favorite college course so far?

I am seriously in love with my Drawing I class! I’m learning a lot on how to improve the skills that I have and how to tackle challenges that I face when drawing. In high school, I was only able to get two semesters of any art class (which is another story) and I’ve found having this class and my Foundations 2D class quite refreshing because I actually get to study what I’m passionate about.

What’s your typical restaurant order?

I usually end up ordering a cheeseburger, even when I attempt to be “adventurous.”

What is your favorite show to binge watch?

Oof. This question is tough for me because only God knows how many shows that I’ve binge-watched, but if I had to choose I would go with either Bob’s Burgers (when I’m needing some comedy) or Daredevil (when I’m needing something dark). Both are fantastic shows and I recommend them to my friends and family all of the time.

Where is your favorite place?

My favorite place is definitely Fort Robinson State Park. It’s located in Crawford, Nebraska and visit it frequently because a) my hometown is only an hour away and b) Crawford is where my grandpa lives so I can stay at his house and relax. I love driving through Smiley Canyon and visiting the Fort horses during the autumn and winter months, hiking the buttes, or taking pictures of the sunset (which is a favorite activity of my little sister and me!). It’s literally the best and if you haven’t visited, then make a plan to do so!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I’ll be graduated with my Bachelor’s degree and most likely working as a graphic designer for a company while attempting to write a novel or book of poetry on the side. I may be in a relationship, I may not, but I know that I’ll definitely have either a rescue dog or cat (preferably a dog so we can go on adventures together). I would also love to be living in the Pacific Northwest, but we’ll see where work takes me.

What is one item you cannot live without and why?

Either headphones or earbuds. I love listening to music and find a lot of inspiration and relief from my playlists…one of my worst fears is forgetting my earbuds on a long trip or losing a really good pair.

Favorite Food?

I have a serious soft spot for tamales! I especially love the tamales served at Mi Ranchito, a Mexican restaurant in my hometown and order them every single time I visit.

What is one thing about college that you wish you knew before you became a freshman?

Don’t let pressure from others, including your parents, force you into things that you know you’ll end up hating. Follow your own path and don’t be afraid if the ride gets bumpy. When things get overwhelming, don’t be afraid to stop and take a quick breather before continuing your journey!

Why should someone join HC?

HC provides a safe space for anybody who wants to be creative and express themselves through writing. The community of HC is fantastic and I’ve become friends with some spectacular people.

Abbey is a senior at the University of Wyoming and is currently majoring in Journalism. She couldn't imagine a world without Jesus, coffee, The 1975, Twitter or her family. You'll usually find her at a concert or cafe somewhere, which is where she spends majority of her free-time. Talking to band members after their shows is a hobby, along with thrifting & indulging in all aspects of pop culture. After college, she plans to spend more time at concerts, getting paid to write about music and bands.
