Criticism: The Secret Bully

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Wyoming chapter.

What do we get out of criticizing everything we watch, read, or the people we interact with? I am not talking about constructive criticism; I am talking about the blatant criticism that makes people believe that they are not good enough.

Every time I look at a post on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or any other Social Media platform, there are comments that have no reason for being posted. Just because you feel as if someone is not good enough for you, that does not mean that they should be treated poorly. This is why children grow up learning that bullying is something that is considered normal.

As humans, we constantly judge each other because of the way we look, dress, or act, without considering that the human being that is being treated this way has feelings.

You know that old saying, “Sticks and stones can break your bones but words can never hurt you.” Well, that is a lie because words hurt more than anything else in the world. Words are what come out of people’s mouths; words are what people constantly think about and arrange in a way to speak, so, yes, they hurt so much more.

Since I was in Elementary School, I was criticized because of the way I looked; I remember the other kids in my class telling me that I was ugly. It was not until I reached high school that I realized that I did not care what people thought of me. The sting from the names that I was called are still present; however, they only help me realize that I am so much more than what other people think of me.

I have lost friends over the years but I have also gained many more, some that teach me that being myself is the best thing possible. It is troubling to think that kids continue growing up in a world in which it is fine to treat people horribly. Taking a step to show that bullying is not right, that is the only way to achieve a healthier environment.
