10 Things You’ll Only Understand if You Live With a Boy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Wyoming chapter.

After a year in the dorms as a freshman, facing the dilemma of finding somewhere to live can be stressful and quite frankly, the thought of living with 3 other girls was frightening. I’m pretty bad at being a girl tbh and I’ve always found it easier to get along with guys, so when a friend from high school asked me to live with him, I took the opportunity. It meant I didn’t have to live with other girls, which is exactly what I wanted to avoid. One thing I will say is it’s a lot different that it is living with someone of the same sex and you have to experience it to realize what it’s like But! I have 10 things that you’ll understand if you live with a boy, if you are curious or if you just need someone to relate to.

  1. Your house will smell like boy. All the time. Though this can sound bad, it depends on the type of ‘boy’ smell you’re dealing with. Thankfully, my house smells consistently like cologne, but nevertheless, you’d never know a girl lives there based on the smell. Thanks, Calvin Klein.

  2. Outfit advice is useless. My roomie is very good at hyping me up when I’m not sure about my appearance, but there are some days where I feel like I could ask him if I look okay in a garbage bag and he’d say yes. Sometimes, you just need honesty, even if it stings and I know he’d never put me down.

  3. If you run out of tampons, good luck girly. Have you ever woken up to Mother Nature’s lovely gift and realized you’re clean out of tampons? It’s the worst. Usually, if you had female roommates, you could probably ask around and one of them is bound to have a tampon, but living with a boy means there’s nothing stashed to save you until you go to the store. All I have to say is: stash several boxes of tampons to avoid this experience.

  4. Sharing closets just won’t happen. Unfortunately, it’s not a thing to share closets when you’re living with a boy. Plain and simple.

  5. People will ask if you’re dating. When I first told people I was living with a boy, they asked if it was my boyfriend that I don’t have. My roommate actually has a girlfriend who is one of my closest friends. Be prepared for questions, they’ll probably come, but it def doesn’t mean that living with a boy equates to dating them.

  6. There won’t be any drama. This is my absolute favorite part of living with a male, they literally don’t care about the little things girls can get mad over. If anything, it’s easier to vent to my roommate when I’m frustrated and know he won’t make anything a huge deal. Not to mention, there’s no fighting, everything is straightforward which makes for a happy home.

  7. You have plenty of bathroom space. Spreading out your straightener, makeup, brush, bobby pins, etc. along the counter is nbd because your roommate doesn’t need the bathroom nearly as much as you do! I clean up after myself most of the time, but it’s nice to have a clutter-free counter to get ready in the morning.

  8. You have to compromise on house decorations. Sometimes living with girls can be easy because you all tend to like the same girly colors and cute little trinkets and designs for your house. Living with boys though- they probably don’t want pink and frills and crazy décor everywhere. Thankfully, I’m not a huge fan of colors so I got lucky, but it’s just a warning for anyone who plans to live with a boy and expects to make their house completely girl-ified.

  9. You have a built in big brother/best friend. One thing I love about living with my roommate is that he’s someone I can go to for literally anything and he’s there for me.

  10. You won’t want to live with girls ever again. I don’t think I could live with girls after living with my roommate because everything is just so much easier when you live with a boy. There’s no drama, they’re a lot more laid back, they are still super fun and you can do your own thing and they can do theirs; there’s no need to always be together. So thanks, Hunter, this is for you, dude, you’re the best roomie ever.
