Winter Holiday Countdown: Victoria Events to Look Out For

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Vic chapter.

It’s almost December, which means it’s finally socially acceptable to fully immerse yourself in Christmas. But no matter how much decorating, baking, and binge-watching you do, it never really feels like the season until you get out of the house and share the Christmas spirit by doing some fun activities. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, these events are a lot of fun and a great way to get out of the house this rainy season. If you’re going to be on the mainland for the holidays, check out HC at SFU’s list of fun activities to do in the Vancouver area. If you’re staying in Victoria, keep reading below!

Canada’s National Gingerbread Showcase

Forget the pre-made gingerbread house you buy in a box every year. This showcase allows you to see some of the best gingerbread creations from across the country. Hosted at Victoria’s Inn at Laurel Point, it runs from November 19th to January 2nd, and all proceeds go towards Habitat for Humanity Victoria. This year’s theme is “Around the World,” so embrace your wanderlust, get into the Christmas spirit, and help a good cause- all in one trip!

Christmas at the Butchart Gardens

From December 1st to January 6th you can celebrate Christmas at the world famous Butchart Gardens. Every season here is beautiful, but for this month only you can check out their Christmas light display, outdoor skating rink, and a special holiday dinner at the Blue Poppy Restaurant. You can also take a ride on the Rose Carousel and peruse the unique gardens. It’s a little pricier, at $26.60 for admission, with added costs for the festive specials, but definitely worth it if you want to really get into the spirit.

Island Farms Santa’s Light Parade

This one is a little early, but on November 26th at 5:45, you can watch Santa and other floats parade through downtown Victoria. After the parade you can get refreshments at Centennial Square, and watch Santa officially declare Christmas in Victoria.

Festive Christmas High Tea at The Teahouse

Check out The Teahouse at Abkhazi Garden for a delicious, festive high tea. From November 25th to January 8th, you can celebrate to season with a delicious four-course tea for $45.

Merridale’s Enchanted Courtyard Light Up

Check out the Merridale courtyard and orchard for a beautiful light-up that happens every Friday, Saturday and Sunday till the end of December. It’s full of fun holiday displays, and you can enjoy the whole thing while sipping on a warm cup of mulled cider.

Inner Harbour Marina Light Up

Don’t miss this light up happening in the heart of downtown Victoria, the inner harbour. At 4pm from November 26th to December 30th you can watch as boats and docks light up with lights to help you get into the Christmas spirit! There is also a light up and market at Ogden Point if you want to check out two in one night.

Ghosts of Christmas Past Walking Tours

Everyone knows Victoria is renowned for its haunted buildings, so what better time to check them out than Christmas? Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from December 2nd to January 1st you can immerse yourself in a 90 minute walking tour that tells you all about the spooks of Victoria. If you really want to get into the mood, watch a Nightmare Before Christmas before you go.
