What TV Shows We Watched over the Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Vic chapter.

We are well into October. Fall is officially here and so are midterms. You might be looking for some long-lost summer bliss, or maybe you need another TV show to distract you from all your pesky deadlines. Here’s what HC at UVic watched over the summer that we feel you should add to your list!

Comedy

Glow

Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling was a real show that aired in the 80s, and Glow is a fictional retelling of the show and the women who starred in it. It’s funny, and 80s (in a good way). But I cannot stress enough the complexity of the female characters and the relationships within the show. Surprising heartfelt and raw, Glow will not disappoint.

Take Two

Released in June 2018, Take Two  is an upbeat comedy series about a former TV star Sam Swift (Rachel Bilson) who used to play a cop on TV. But after a public fall from grace, she wants to make a comeback by shadowing a private investigator to help her reprise her role. You’re in for a hot ride!

Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek is a CBC comedy about a wealthy family who lose everything—well, almost everything. With one remaining asset, a small town called Schitt’s Creek, they must face this newfound poverty together as a family, for better or for worse.

Drama

Killing Eve

I cannot say enough about this show. It’s fast paced, smart, and you can tell that the writers did everything in their power to make this show a killer (pun intended). Sandra Oh plays an MI5 agent, Eve Polastri, assigned to hunt down a female assassin called Villanelle (Jodie Comer). Both actresses have amazing presence on screen and their chemistry sparks. I mean, come on—we all know Sandra Oh deserved the Emmy for her performance in this role.

The next show, Sharp Objects, contains mature subject matter that may be triggering to some viewers. Please take care of yourself and be kind.

Sharp Objects

Sharp Objects is based of the Gillian Flynn novel of the same name. Yes, the same Gillian Flynn who wrote Gone Girl, and if that isn’t enough for you to say yes to this show, you should know that Amy Adams plays the protagonist. Sharp Objects tells the story of Camille Preaker, a journalist called back to her hometown to report on the unsolved murders of two little girls. As the search continues, her relationship with her estranged family begins to complicate in strange ways, and the longer she stays, the more she begins to unravel. This show is dark, gritty, and a dream to watch. Every single female character in this show should win an Emmy for their performance, and I do not say that lightly.

The Blacklist

The Blacklist boasts a total of five seasons with a sixth on the way. The show follows a new FBI profiler, Elizabeth Keen, when one of the world’s most wanted criminals, Raymond Reddington, switches sides and agrees to work with the FBI, but only if he can work with her. How’s that for good cop, bad cop?

Sci-fi

Wynonna Earp

This is an awesome Canadian TV series filmed in Alberta. Wynonna Earp, based on a graphic novel of the same name, follows Wynonna after she returns to her hometown, Purgatory, to take up her destined role as Wyatt Earp’s heir: demon protector. Strong female characters would be putting it lightly.

Killjoys

This is a sci-fi space drama about a trio of Killjoys, AKA bounty hunters, as they travel through an area of space known as the Quad chasing their warrants. The dynamic between a soldier, a peacemaker, and a deadly killer makes this show a joy to watch.

Animation

My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia follows Izuku Midoriya and his journey to become the world’s greatest superhero in a universe where people are born with superpowers—even though he has none. Despite this, Izuku is determined to enroll in the prestigious superhero academy, and we learn what it really takes to be a superhero.

Voltron: Legendary Defender

Let’s be honest: we’re all trying to find a show to replace Avatar: The Last Airbender. You are in luck with Voltron: Legendary Defender, a series about a group of teenagers transported into an intergalactic space war—who become pilots of giant space lions. I know, it sounds a little far-fetched, but trust me: you’ll laugh, cry, and probably fall in love with Shiro because, what’s not to love?

Tried and True

Gossip Girl

Need I say more? XOXO, Gossip Girl
