Tuesday, September 22, was the official welcome celebration for UVic’s Residence Resource HUB. Located directly across from the Carroll Building, the Resident Resource HUB is shared space for students at UVic who live both on and off campus to connect to different resources. At the launch, tables were set up with representatives from many of the programs to introduce what they do and to give students an idea of what their sessions would be like. There was free hot chocolate and other drinks and snacks, and Community Leaders attended to answer any questions students had.  At only two and half years old, the HUB offers a lot of exciting opportunities.

We talked to Terry, the Assistant Manager of Residence Education, to get more information on everything the HUB offers. Health and wellness resources include Nurse in Residence, where nurses and student-nurses give help and support. Food Services hosts monthly events with a dietician to help you stay healthy as a student.  Soul Sundays is a program that explores spirituality and aids in mental health.

Academic resources include Science Study Sessions, a place for science students to create study groups and get help from older students; Math and Statistics Assistance, where students can get support for any 100-200 math or stats class; and the Personal Library Program which includes sessions with personal librarians to help anyone become more efficient as a researcher and student. The HUB also hosts other programs such as the Leadership Development Program, Co-op and Career sessions, Meditation and Yoga classes, and QVic, a safe place and social group for queer and questioning students. These programs are run by a mix of both faculty members and students, and the space is coordinated by Res Services.

Overall, it is a fun space where students can access very helpful resources at no cost and without having to get out of their PJ’s if they live on campus.

If you have any questions or comments about the HUB or would like to host a program, you can contact the coordinator at HUB@UVic.ca or at the Residence Services Office!
