The giving season is back once again! Secret Santa is a staple during the Christmas season, but as a university student on a tight budget, it’s often hard to find both trendy and budget-friendly gifts. So, with a few price points in mind, here are some gift ideas to help you start your holiday search.

Gifts Over $25

Glassware Sets:

As someone who has just moved out on their own, I’m in love with a fun holiday gift that’s also practical. Glassware sets fall perfectly into this category. Ripple-shaped, ribbed, or decorated with charming little designs, you’re guaranteed to find a set that is perfectly tailored to your friend’s personality. The price range varies quite dramatically based on the quality and location that you shop from, averaging between $30-$70. I suggest starting your search at The Bay, Crate & Barrel, Anthropology, Homesense, and Indigo.

Disposable/Reusable Cameras:

For slightly lower price points, disposable film cameras are another amazing gift for photography girlies and your social friends. Perfect for documenting their latest travel, excursion, or girl’s night out, it’s an easy party favorite. Disposable film cameras typically run for around $25-$30 and are available online or in-store at Walmart or London Drugs.

For those with a bit more money to spend, a reusable film camera or digital camera is a fancier option. With prices ranging around $40-$80, it’s a great gift that they will love for years to come. You can check them out online or in-store at stores like Walmart, London Drugs, or Best Buy.

Mushroom or Herb Growing Kit:

Mushroom or herb-growing kits are a great gift, especially for those who struggle to keep plants alive. These sets have super clear instructions, are easy to grow, and require very little maintenance. Not only do they create a cute countertop decoration, but fresh herbs are also great to add to your food and drinks. Keep in mind that not all mushroom kits are edible, so take a close look at the one you buy. But the edible ones could be the perfect gift for the more adventurous eaters. These kits have a price point of around $30-$60 and can be found online at Amazon, Etsy, and Walmart.

Gifts Under $25

Tote Bags / Reusable Grocery Bags:

Totes or reusable bags are a gift that I always love to receive because I can’t leave my house without one. When in doubt, I would say to go with simple and neutral designs and colors, but the options are truly endless for your more eccentric friends. Personally, I’m obsessed with the Baggu Reusable Bags, which come in tons of designs and three different sizes. These are available locally at Belle General in Victoria. But you’ll find many different brands that sell them online, including Amazon, Bentley, Indigo, and Etsy.

Aromatherapy Products:

Though candles are often seen as a lazy gift, I think they’re a classic for a reason. But for those wanting to be a little bit more unique—I got you! In the gift-giving scene, other aromatherapy products are often neglected. Perfume rollers, reed diffusers, and even a good set of air fresheners (including ones for cars) are some of my holiday faves. Some great places to find these products are Sage, Bath & Body Works, The Body Shop, and Lush.

Silk Pillowcases:

As someone who owns a silk pillowcase, I swear by it. The best aspects of it are that it’s very soft and stays cool all night. Silk pillows are great for your skin and hair so this is the best gift for your friends who love self-care! Though there are many expensive ones on the market, you’ll find lots for under $25 on Amazon.

Secret Santa can be a daunting task, so I hope I was able to ease some of your holiday gift-giving stress and start you on your journey to becoming a present-giving professional. This season we can all rise beyond the ultimate cop-out –a gift card– and give something a little more personal to our loved ones and friends. Happy Holidays!
