A Dinosour is an alcoholic beverage that can only be consumed by adults within the legal drinking age (19+)
Phillips Brewing offers some of the most unique sour beer flavours on the market. Their four new seasonal flavours: Passionfruit Orange Guava (POG), Dragonfruit Lychee, Key Lime Pie: Dinosaur Power, and Crooked Tooth: Nitro Pumpkin Ale are in stores now and definitely worth a try!
A few of our executives from Her Campus at U Vic had the opportunity to visit Phillips’ tasting room located at 2000 Government Street in Victoria, BC. Our experience was exciting, as the atmosphere of the tasting room is vibrant and energetic. The staff are welcoming and very helpful, offering us suggestions and insights on their new Dinosour flavours.
Inside the tasting room, there are flourishing plants, long wooden tables, and city bikes mounted on the walls, which perfectly encapsulate the essence of Victoria. A unique feature of the tasting room is the window at the back, which allows customers to get a behind-the-scenes look into the brewery itself.
Best Can Art and Best Flavour All-in-One
Our favourite flavour is the Passionfruit Orange Guava Dinosour, which evokes a sense of nostalgia for summer. It has a tropical, tangy creamsicle taste with a sharp and fresh aroma, dominated by the strong scent of passionfruit. The taste is light, with creamy sweetness in each sip. We gave this sour a rating of 9 out of 10 stars.
Dragonfruit Lychee…Yes, You Read That Right
Coming in as a close second is the Dragonfruit Lychee Dinosour, a captivating blend of dragonfruit and lychee, pouring in a vibrant magenta colour. This sour has an energetic and intoxicating floral aroma, reminiscent of fresh roses. It is the only seasonal flavour available on tap in the tasting room, and we think it’s deserving of this role, rating it an 8 out of 10.
Living up to the DinoSOUR Name
In third place is the Key Lime Pie: Dinosour Power, a refreshing mix of sweet and sour flavours. The key lime is dominant and permeates the beer with its citrusy aroma. It has a fresh and clean scent, similar to a natural counter cleaner. Out of all four sours, the Key Lime Pie Power has the highest alcohol content, making it the most yeasty and acidic. While the lime flavour is distinct, there are only subtle hints of pie, mainly in the vanilla flavour. Our biggest question was whether the Pie in Key Lime Pie was just for eye-catching or whether it was actually built into the flavour profile. Based on flavour, however, we rated this one a 7 out of 10.
The Black Sheep of Dinosours
Lastly, we have the Crooked Tooth: Nitro Pumpkin Ale, which we describe as the “black coffee” of Dinosours. It has a strong aroma and taste of fresh pumpkin puree, with dashes of cinnamon and nutmeg. However, Crooked Tooth is an acquired taste, more suitable for pumpkin lovers and black coffee drinkers. It has a bitter and rich taste, with a dominant burnt and smoky flavour. To a non-beer drinker, it could be described as a “burnt pumpkin pie,” but for those who are accustomed to the taste of darker beers, it may be right up your alley! Given that we’re not accustomed to that taste, we rated this one a 6 out of 10.
Overall, the four seasonal dinosaur flavours are extremely distinct from one another. If you’re choosing only one to try first, we recommend the Passionfruit Orange Guava or the Dragonfruit Lychee as the most universally enjoyable flavours. But, if you’re feeling adventurous, the Key Lime Pie or Crooked Tooth may be for you. If you haven’t tried them yet, we highly recommend giving them a chance, as you may find your new favourite beer. Thanks so much to Phillips for having us!
