Ideas for an Awesome Valentine’s Day: Single Girl’s Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Vic chapter.

For the single girl, Valentine’s Day (or Single’s Awareness Day) can be absolutely dreadful. As someone who just got out of a relationship, I can’t exactly say that I’ll be looking forward to the 14th. However instead of moping around, I will be hanging out with a great group of gal pals to have some fun and keep my mind off disappointing boys. As Leslie Knope would say, ovaries before bro-varies!

For those without a man or woman in their life this Valentine’s Day, get a group together and celebrate your independence with one of these non-romantic activities. After all, who says you need to be alone?

1. Non-Rom Com Movie Marathon

I love a good rom-com just as much as the next girl, but Valentine’s Day is not the time to bring out “10 Things I Hate About You”.  Instead of reducing yourself to tears over the perfect chemistry between Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, pop in some comedies that instead eschew a major romantic plotline.

Some great picks are:

  • How to be a Man
  • Bachlorette
  • Napoleon Dynamite
  • Dumb & Dumber
  • Safety not Guaranteed
  • The Heat
  • Baby Mama

Alternatively, if these movies aren’t steamy enough for you, there’s always the option to…

Go See the Valentine’s Day Premier of Fifty Shades of Grey!

While no one will voluntarily admit that they want to see this controversial flick, deep down you know you want to. If anyone gives you a hard time, say you’re going for the killer soundtrack which features artists like Beyoncé, Sia, and Ellie Goulding.

2. Game Night

Call up that one friend who owns Cards Against Humanity and get a party started. If this raunchy card game is not your style, check out Victoria’s board game café and enjoy playing the finest games of your childhood like Sorry! A little competitive energy helps you forget about all the time you wasted on your exes. Eyes on the prize!

3. Spa Day

Don’t have someone special in your life to treat you this Valentine’s Day? Treat. Yo. Self. Whip up some homemade face masks (my favourite is honey-lemon juice-cinnamon) and scrubs and get a bit dirty. Who needs a SO when your skin is gleaming and your nails are freshly painted?

4. DIY Sundae Bar

I strongly believe in the theory that ice cream will always make you feel better (it’s actually been proven with science). Therefore if you’re feeling down this Valentine’s Day, do the right thing and invite your friends over for some ice cream BYOT style – that’s Bring Your Own Topping. There are very few things that will brighten your day like calories and friendship.
