HC's Holiday Bucket List

The holiday season has officially descended upon Victoria. Christmas lights are making their way up on houses across the city, stores have begun to play Christmas songs, and it is now (almost) socially acceptable to only listen to the Michael Bublé Christmas album. Christmas is usually an absolute whirlwind of exams, family visits and general tomfoolery. Before you know it, it will be Jan. 1 and you’ll look back and wonder what happened to the holidays. This year, make the most of Christmas on the island with our holiday bucket list.

  1. 1. Watch the Santa Claus Parade.

November 30th is the 38th Island Farms Santa’s Light Parade. What better way to kick off the Holidays than by grabbing your friends, some hot cocoa and watching the parade?

  2. 2. Attend the Advent Procession at Christ Church Cathedral.

A truly beautiful evening of choral music and candlelight, the advent procession is a great way to go into the holiday season with a clear mind and joyful spirit.

  3. 3. Go to a craft fair.

One of the best parts of the Christmas season is all of the craft fairs and artisan markets that take place. Instead of buying your loved ones traditional gifts from the mall, check out some of the local craft fairs to find them a gift that is truly unique.

  4. 4. Make Christmas cards.

Instead of buying the typical hallmark cards, this year make your own! The Delta Victoria will be hosting a Christmas card making workshop December 4th, with all proceeds going to Santa’s anonymous.

  5. 5. Visit the Gingerbread Showcase.

The Habitat for Humanity Gingerbread Showcase takes place every year. Go see the amazing edible creations crafted by bakers from all over the city. You can even donate to vote for your favourite! All proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity.

  6. 6. Jon and Roy Holiday Special.

The 11th annual Holiday Special will take place December 6th. Join Jon and Roy, as well as other artists for this fun music-filled event that is sure to get you in the yuletide mood.

  7. 7. Spend a cozy Saturday at Bastion Books.

Every weekend starting December 1st head down to Bastion Books to enjoy hot apple cider next to a roaring fire and make some DIY paper crafts.

  8. 8. Visit with Santa.

While this is typically something parents do with their young children, it doesn’t mean you and your crew can’t do it too. This year the Royal BC Museum is hosting Father Christmas in Old Town Victoria. Even if you aren’t interested in seeing Old Saint Nick, walking through the beautifully decorated Old Town is a treat.

  9. 9. Join in some carolling.

Every weekend starting Dec. 7 join the Roaming Carollers for an afternoon of joyful music.

  10. 10. Christmas at the Butchart Gardens.

A beautiful event that takes place every year. Visit the Butchart Gardens during the holiday season to see a truly beautiful and exquisite light show.

  11. 11. Lights of Wonder.

Starting Dec. 13 Centennial Square will be host to the largest free outdoor light display. Gather your friends and family and join in the holiday magic!

  12. 12. Ghosts of Christmas Past Tour.

It’s no secret that Victoria has a few ghosts haunting its streets. This holiday season Discover the Past’s Ghostly Walks team will take you on a tour of the city and share their favourite yuletide haunting stories.

There you have it. A quick round up of just a few of the events going on in Victoria this holiday season. No matter what you decide to do, make sure to spend your time with the ones you love.
