Gifts We Wanted as Kids But Never Got

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Vic chapter.

The holidays are the perfect time to let your imagination run wild. They’re a time of excitement, especially if you’re getting ready to celebrate a holiday that involves gift-giving, and even more so when you’re a child. You might finally get that one thing you’ve been asking for all year… or you might get something completely different. We asked our team to reflect on what gifts they always asked for as kids but never got. Here’s what they said:

A kid-sized car.

“I used to circle pretty much the entire Sears holiday catalogue, but my holy grail was always one of those child-sized cars that you could actually drive around. They were so cool! I still wonder to this day if the reason I’m a bad driver is that my parents didn’t get me started as a small child.” – Emma, fourth-year writing student.

Holiday Barbie.

“I always wanted the holiday Barbie. I used to ask for her every single year. I would take the old Sears catalogues and cut out her picture and glue it to craft paper to show my parents what I wanted. I’m an adult now though, which means that when I see her I can buy her for myself” – Ria, fourth-year anthropology student.

A trampoline.

“I grew up in Vancouver, so most of the gifts I never got revolved around needing more space than we had. Most of all, I wanted a secret room in our house, but since that wasn’t exactly feasible, I focussed my blue-sky Christmas asks on getting one of those big trampolines that always feel like someone is one bad bounce away from an ER trip.” – Skye, fourth-year English student.

A puppy!

“I desperately wanted a puppy growing up, despite my disinterest in taking care of our cat and fish. Every year, I would write up a plan and give a presentation on why we should get one. My dad had allergies though, so he always said no. Ironically enough, a couple of years after I moved out, my dad changed his mind, so my parents got a purebred Harrier. They claim she wasn’t a replacement for me, but I’m not convinced!” – Beth, fourth-year English and writing student.

While we may not have always gotten what we dreamed of, in the end, the holidays are about the people and not the gifts. The gifts sure don’t hurt though! We at HC UVic hope you get everything you’ve dreamed of this holiday season, be it good grades, tasty treats or a holiday Barbie.
