’Tis the Season: Fun Holiday Events to Check Out

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

It’s almost that time of year again – the holiday season! Whether you want to stay on campus or explore new parts of the city, there are plenty of exciting upcoming events that’ll be sure to get you in the holiday spirit.

Hart House Winter Buffet

For those of you looking for something a bit closer to home, the Hart House Winter Buffet is a great option. I went a few years ago with my family and the food was fantastic! Held in Hart House’s beautiful Grand Hall, the lunch features traditional dishes such as turkey and roast beef, as well as vegan options and an assortment of delicious desserts.

Dates: Dec. 15-17, seating time: 11:45 am or 12:45pm

Cost: $35 students, $45 adults

Hart House Tea Social

Hart House also holds a free tea social every Tuesday in the Reading Room. This is a great way to get out of the cold and enjoy some snacks and warm tea with fellow students!

Dates: Tuesdays 11am-1pm

Toronto Christmas Market

The annual Christmas Market at the Distillery District is one of the city’s top attractions during the holiday season. The market features local vendors, boutiques, and restaurants, along with musical entertainment. New this year: while admission to the market is free on weekdays, there is an entry cost of $5 on weekends (this is being done as part of an effort to reduce weekend crowds). So keep that in mind when planning when you’d like to go.

Dates: Nov. 20-Dec. 20 (market closed Mondays). Usually open from 12pm-9pm (varies).

Cavalcade of Lights

This free event takes place at Nathan Philips Square, right in front of City Hall – it’s the city’s way of starting the holidays. The night will kick off with a skating party (featuring music from Disney’s Frozen!); scheduled performers also include the Toronto Children’s Chorus, Zero Gravity Circus Aerial Act, and Toronto-based rock band Sloan. Be sure to stay for the fireworks show, the open-air skating rink, and the illumination of the city’s official Christmas tree!

Date: Fri. Nov. 28, 6pm-10:30pm

Lauren Pare is a fourth-year English specialist at the University of Toronto. When she is not reading Shakespeare or modern poetry for school, she enjoys writing, painting, yoga, and green tea.
Lucian Wang is an Editor with HerCampus UToronto, after starting out as a Writer in his first year. He is currently double majoring in Political Science, along with Biodiversity and Conservation Biology. Apparently you can do that. Along with HerCampus, he is also involved with the University of Toronto Pre-Law Society as its Vice-President - a little more vice than president.  He hopes to pursue law school after he completes his undergraduate degree. He enjoys listening to music (consisting largely of an unhealthy fascination with Taylor Swift), looking damn good in a suit, and spending far too much time staring at his pet turtle. He does not enjoy walking or the beach, so long walks there are out of the question.
