Calling All the Single Ladies: Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

So you’re single for Valentine’s Day? Thinking about spending the day on the couch, watching Netflix, with only Ben and Jerry to keep you company? Think again, fellow collegiettes! Here are five ways single girls can celebrate a loveless Valentine’s Day.

1. Go to the Movies

It seems like Hollywood answered all of the single girl prayers this year by blessing us with Fifty Shades of Grey, coming out this Valentine’s Day. Getting to see a hot Irishman, Jamie Dornan, play a seductive businessman on the big screen? Yes please! But if you’re not in the mood for romance, The Wedding Ringer is a great comedy about an awkward man, portrayed by Josh Gad, hiring a best man, played by Kevin Hart, for his wedding. Whether you’re in the mood to watch a steamy romance or a hilarious comedy, the movies have you covered this Valentine’s Day!

2. Go Out to Eat

Whether you’re going out with a group of friends or by yourself, Toronto has delicious restaurants right near campus. My personal favorite is Momofuku, an Asian noodle bar right on University Ave. Momofuku not only serves amazing noodles, you can also purchase excellent desserts. Upstairs is home to The Milk Bar, complete with delicious cookies and cake truffles. If your not in the mood for Asian cuisine, Earls, a kitchen and bar located on King Street West, offers casual dining with an upscale cabin vibe. They even have a special Valentine’s Day menu, featuring steak, oven roasted salmon, and savory desserts. But if you’re just looking for a place to get your Valentine’s Day sweet fix, The Big Chill on Manning Avenue has waffles and crepes complete with ice cream on top that will satisfy even the biggest sweet tooth. Toronto is filled with various restaurants that will make your taste buds fall in love.

3. Shop

Retail therapy is a great way to get your mind off being single for National Relationship Day. Living in a city like Toronto gives us access to one of the best malls in all of Canada. The Eaton Centre is the perfect place to discover great deals, beautiful clothes, and amazing cosmetics. Featuring stores like Coach, Mac, H & M, J. Crew, and LUSH, the Eaton Centre is a great place to get all your shopping done. But if that’s not enough, the high end stores on Bloor will surely make your jaw drop. Even though many college budgets will not allow you to actually purchase the clothes, window shopping is always fun. Checking out the trends in Louis Vuitton, Kate Spade, Gucci, Prada, and Michael Kors will sure to have you falling in love.

4. Throw a Party

If you don’t want to spend your Valentine’s Day alone, throwing a party is the perfect solution. An Anti-Valentine’s Day theme is a great theme to celebrate Valentine’s Day and being single all together. This BuzzFeed article is a perfect guide to follow for outfit, activity, and food ideas. http://www.buzzfeed.com/alannaokun/24-ideas-for-throwing-the-perfect-anti-valentines#.ru1LRAXaK

5. Treat Yourself to a Spa Day

If you really don’t feel like hitting the town, relaxing at home is always a great idea. Reenergizing yourself with a nice warm bath, or if you’re in residence, a nice warm shower is a great way to unwind after a stressful school week. Add in a face mask and soothing music to complete your perfect Valentine’s Day spa.

Whether it’s going downtown, eating delicious food, or just relaxing at home, realize that even without a significant other, Valentine’s Day can include a lot more than being annoyed at every single couple you spot on the 14th.
