Best Places to Eat Within Walking Distance of Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

I often hear that there are no good places to eat on or near campus and that there are only so many meals that you can eat at Tim’s, food trucks, and college cafeterias before you need to eat somewhere new. But it’s also that time of year where we have so much work to do that we need every spare moment that we can get. So I’ve put together a list of some of the best places to eat within walking distance of campus that will hopefully keep you well fed this exam season.

  • If you’re studying at Robarts: the cafeteria at Robarts always seems to be closed and there are a plethora of food trucks but I would highly recommend checking out Daddy O’s and the pizza from either Papa Ceo’s or Cora’s. Neither is more than a 5 minute walk away and both offer great alternatives.
  • If you’re at Vic or St. Mike’s: when people tell you about the different places that you can eat on campus, I feel like St. Mike’s and Vic always get left out because they’re on the other side of Queen’s Park. I recommend trying one of the restaurants on Charles Street such as 7 West or Gourmet Burger Company. Sccacia in the Manulife Centre (right next to Bloor Street Market) is another great option that is definitely worth checking out.
  • If you’re by the Law School, the Faculty of Music, or the ROM: when I’m in this area I always make sure to head over to Whole Foods, located on Avenue Road just a few minutes walk north of Bloor. It has an excellent selection of prepared foods both hot and cold and the salad bar is phenomenal.
  • If you’re by Sanford Fleming, Con Hall, or the Mechanical Engineering building: my top choice in this area is to get Indian food at Veda located in the basement of Sanford Fleming. You can also find Veda in the Multi Faith Centre.
  • If you’re by one of the miscellany of UofT buildings by Bloor and Spadina: try Fresh for some delicious vegetarian or vegan options that will appeal to everybody. Any of the places attached to the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Center are also really good- Pita Q has great shawarma, Crepes A Go Go is good for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and Greg’s Ice Cream or the neighboring Yo Yo’s Yogurt are both great for dessert or as an after exam treat.
  • Hart House also hosts 5 Buck Lunches a few times a year that come with a starter, main and side dishes, and dessert.
  • Also, while it’s a bit further from campus than the places listed above, I recommend trying Caplansky’s Deli if you’re by College and Spadina. The knish and corned beef sandwiches are definitely worth the extra walking time.

And the list goes on, there are countless options within walking distance of wherever you are on campus and there are still a lot of places that I want to try that aren’t on this list. La Societe is supposed to have amazing French onion soup (I’m still reeling over the loss of Bistro 990), L’Espresso Bar Mercurio and Bar Mercurio both always seem to be packed, and I Went to Philly and Fancy Franks both offer classic comfort foods that I’m going to have problems resisting.
