5 Ways to Transform your Summer Outfits into Fall Outfits

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

Sometimes you have cute summer outfits that you still want to wear once fall comes around, but they may not be the warmest pieces of clothing. Luckily, there are many warm clothing pieces that you can add to your wardrobe to add to your summer look–without losing style points. You probably already have some of these pieces in your closet, and if not, they’re generally inexpensive to buy. These clothing pieces are better for the fall, but are still appropriate to wear in other seasons, so you won’t have to waste money on clothing pieces you will only wear once. So if you’re having trouble keeping warm in the fall, here is five articles of clothing to make your summer outfits more fall-appropriate.

1. Scarves/Ponchos

Scarves are a great way to add style and warmth to your outfit. If you just want to add a little something to your outfit, you can go for a chunky, knit scarf on colder nights, and a sheer light scarf on warmer days. Ponchos are also a great piece that you can throw on your shoulders. A poncho will make it look like you put a lot of time into your outfit, when it really only took a few seconds.

2. Cardigans

Want to wear a strapless dress or tanktop but afraid your shoulders will be cold? Your best bet is throw a cardigan over your outfit to keep you warm and stylish at the same time. Cardigans generally look a lot cuter than big puffy jackets, plus a thicker cardigan will provide extra warmth. You can also use coloured cardigans as a way to brighten up a darker outfit.

3. Tights/Knee-high Socks

Sometimes, you want to wear a really cute dress that happens to be on the shorter side, but you’re afraid of the cold weather. Tights and knee-high socks are a great way to keep your legs and feet warm when you want to wear shorter dresses or skirts. Just throw on a pair of tights or knee-high socks (sometimes you can use both) and you’ll be good to go!

4. Boots

As winter approaches, we eventually have to give up the sandals and go for something that will keep our feet warm. Sneakers are a good option for casual outfit, but you can also spice things up with a pair of booties. Black booties or combat boots are great staple pieces to have in your closet because they can go with almost any outfit.

5. Hats

Hats are a great accessory for fall outfits because they keep you warm, but also add style to your oufit. Hats with wide brims are cute pieces to have, but you should opt for a knit beanie if you want something a bit warmer. Baseball caps are also a great piece if you’re going for a more casual look on a warmer day.
