5 Instagram Accounts Dog Lovers Should Be Following

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

One of the best things about Instagram is that there are so many cute animal accounts for us to follow. Whether you like cats, dogs, turtles, hedgehogs, or pigs, there is an account for any animal lover out there. Personally, I love following dog-related Instagram accounts– seeing cute pictures of dogs just makes my day. Check out these 5 Instagram accounts, all of which showcase the beauty, humour, and fun personalities of dogs.

1) @thedogist

The Dogist is a photo series of dogs based in New York. The creator of The Dogist, Elias Friedman, takes his photos by getting down to the dog’s eye level (he also keeps a tennis ball and dog treats with him). I like to call this the dog version of Humans of New York— the caption of each photo often has an interesting fact about the dog…sometimes funny, sometimes serious. Each caption also includes the dog’s name, age, breed, and location. All the dogs that are photographed on The Dogist are so unique, and this might sound weird, but I think each dog’s personality really shines through in all of these photos. I love The Dogist so much that this year I even bought a 2017 The Dogist wall calendar!

2) @zilkerbark

Zilkerbark is similar to The Dogist, but this account mainly captures photos of dogs at Zilker Park, in Austin, Texas. There are lots of pictures of dogs running, playing with tennis balls, jumping, and just having the time of their lives.  One day I hope to be as happy as a dog chasing a tennis ball in the park.

3) @harlowandsage

This account photographs three dogs that live together: Harlow (a Weimaraner), Indiana Thunderbolt (a Miniature Daschund), and Reese Lightning (another Miniature Daschund). These three dogs are the best of friends, and they are adorable. They literally do everything together– even sleep!

The account is called “harlowandsage” because originally, there were just two dogs: Harlow and Sage. Unfortunately, Sage passed away several years ago due to old age.

4) @renecharlesnyc

René-Charles is a “flawless Frenchie” who is from New York City. René-Charles is super sassy, and the Instagram captions on his photos are hilarious. This dog is so fabulous that he hangs out with models at Vogue photoshoots and even has his own book. #relatable.

5) @itsdougthepug

I couldn’t make a list about the best dogs on Instagram and not include Doug The Pug. Doug is the “king of pop culture”. Doug is so famous that he has his own merchandise, he makes appearances at bookstores (oh yeah, he also has a book), he’s verified on Twitter, and has met celebrities like Ed Sheeran, Joe Jonas, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Justin Bieber, and Ryan Seacrest. All the cool celebrity perks aside, the most important thing about Doug is that he makes people happy. He even visits children’s hospitals to help “spread happiness to the ones who need it most”. Doug the Pug is run by Leslie Mosier, his “momager”.
