2012 Beauty Favourites: Tried and Loved

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

As we make our way into 2013, tastes change, styles change, ideas change. I found myself looking inside my beauty wardrobe the other day to clean out what I haven’t used for months. Since I have a lot of products, I like to make sure I don’t have any old, expired, or unused products lying around to make space for new ones. That’s what inspired me to make this post– beauty products I’ve loved in 2012. This was actually a harder task than I thought it would be because I tend to stick to products that work for me, thus I had a hard time remembering whether I tried some of my products for the first time in 2011 or 2012! Either way, I think it’s fun to find out what other people love and to try it yourself to see for yourself if you love it too or otherwise. Without further ado, here are my favourite beauty products I have tried in 2012.

1. Andalou Naturals Meyer Lemon Creamy Cleanser

This cleanser is fabulous for anyone who has normal to combination skin. I have combination skin myself and can have very dry patches during the winter. That’s why I love this cleanser– it caters to my dry patches too. It doesn’t leave my skin tight and dry like many cleansers for “combination” or “oily” skin (I used to have pretty bad acne), but clean and refreshed. Plus it smells like lemons! I’ve gone through probably 4 or 5 bottles of these in 2012.

2. Chanel Vitalimiere Aqua Foundation SPF 15

This is my holy grail foundation, hands down. Whenever I wear foundation, it’s this. And only this. My friends have commented how glowing my skin looks whenever I wear this, without knowing I wear foundation at all! It’s got a super natural light to medium coverage depending on how much you use and how you apply it. It’s also water based, which is great for those who have oilier and sensitive skin types. It feels so light on the skin, sometimes I forget I’m wearing it. It lasts a good amount of time too, but I wouldn’t say through the day and into those late friday nights. What I love about Chanel products in general is many of their face and eye products are not super opaque, they have a bit of sheer-ness to them that allows the natural beauty of your skin shine through. When I use their products, they seem to melt into my skin’s chemistry and provide such a beautiful effect.

3. Tarte Clean Slate Flawless 12-hr Brightening Primer

I’m not very particular when it comes to choosing primers, but I always need to use one under my foundation. I tend to get oily in my t-zone throughout the day and primers really help slow down that process. I purchased this primer near the end of 2012 in the mini sample kit trio that Tarte offers, and loved this more than their poreless primer. It doesn’t have a silicone slippery feeling like some primers do, but it’s a gel-cream type of consistency that completely melts into the skin, laying down a smooth canvas for your foundation to go on. It lasts a long time, keeps my makeup looking fresh,  and smells like citrus!

4. NYX 10 Color Eyeshadow Palette The Runway Collection in Champagne and Caviar

This palette holds a special place in my memories because it is the only set of eyeshadows that I brought with me when I studied abroad last year (unfortunately the mirror cracked by the time I got there). There is a good mix of matte, semi-matte, and shimmery neutral colours here that you can combine for a simple day look or a smoldering night look. The pigment payoff is great, has a smooth texture, and applies and blends seamlessly. My palette was well loved in 2012.

5. Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains

I’m not a huge lip product person, but when I tried these last year, I fell in love. These are really great lipstains that last for a LONG time, has a great colour payoff, and not too drying (but I recommend using a lip balm underneath anyways). I could rave about these for paragraphs on end, but for the sake of your studying time, I won’t. I also like how these twist up as opposed to having to sharpen the pencils when the tip gets low. Revlon, this has got to be your product of the year!
