How to Wear Spring’s Designer Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Penn chapter.

Spring has sprung, and with it new trends have come into our lives as if we’ve been living with them forever. The trends that will rule the spring 2013 season have been portrayed in the cruise collections of major design houses. Here are a few that I think will be the most popular on Penn’s campus.

Relaxed Boyfriend Look: Dolce and Gabbana, Rag and Bone and Pierre Balmain were the first creator of this look a few years ago. Maybe “creators” is the wrong word to use, because the boyfriend look was also popular in the 90s for a short time. However, these fashion geniuses are the ones who rocked it in their cruise collections and spring/summer 2013 Shows. The relaxed boyfriend look is an easy resort trend to follow when you’re on campus and running from one class to another. Ripped jeans with a loose boyfriend cut + smoking slippers on warm days and studded boots on cold ones + a blue or white shirt. There you go! You are ready for class and stylish at the same time. Don’t forget to spice up your look with over-sized watches on the left arm and mixed metal bracelets on the right.

Floral Prints: Flower and petal details have been around for a while, but this will be their time. Lanvin, Erdem and Valentino rule the season with their floral pencil skirts and dresses that combine lace and floral details. The best thing about florals is that this trend is easy to apply in many different outfit ideas, from a cocktail dress to a t-shirt you’ll wear to class. Plus, the floral details add color to your style immediately and create a fun look. At Penn, you can easily combine floral cotton t-shirts with denim skirts or jean shorts. A floral cotton dress can also be the key to your Fling ’13 style. Just add a few floral items to your closet, and you’ll find out how easy it is to combine them!

Cool Blues: The shades of the sea and sky will color everything this season, from bags to leather jackets and sandals to platform pumps. My favorite blue item from the resort collections belongs to Jason Wu. Jason Wu’s leather motorcycle jacket in electric blue is the perfect blue item to complete your spring look. Plus, it will turn all eyes to you on campus. This fun and sexy leather jacket is cool enough to be the statement piece of your look. It is still an easy enough piece to combine with many looks. Look for blues this season when doing your spring shopping.

Print Mixing: Even though this trend seems harder to apply, it actually isn’t. All you need to do is to mix up the patterns. Wear a striped short with a plaid shirt or do the opposite. You’ll be both comfy and stylish at the same time. The only key is to combine patterns with simple handbags and shoes so that your clothes can receive the attention they deserve.
