Tired of coming back to a boring dorm room? Wanna brighten up your little corner of the world? Try some dorm decorations.

The awesome decorations in my friend and CAS freshman Tiffany Lu’s room serve as the inspiration behind this post. A few days ago, I caught up with her and her beautiful dorm decorations and learned the story behind her creativity.

“One of my friends from home has the coolest hipster light display in her room, and so I’ve always had this kind of low-key desire to put up some in mine. In October my friend Sean got a bunch of multicolored Christmas lights in a care package, and he lent them to me until Thanksgiving. Together—utilizing his super badass Penngineering skills, a.k.a. lots of tape—we put them up in a sun display around my bed,” Lu explains. “I guess my hallmates saw how excited I was about the dĂ©cor, because a few weeks later my other friend Sam left a post-it on my desk saying he had a surprise for me. I put those lights up around my bookcase, and I also saved the post-it because I thought it had been such a cute gesture—I guess that also began my collecting of little notes and things from my floormates, which I put up in and around the lights on my bookshelf. The lights inspired me to start personalizing my room around them; I put postcards and pictures from home under the sun, and began sticking little floor remembrances in the lights on my bookshelf.”

Those lights now form the shape of the sun beside her bed. That way, she gets to experience sunrises during any given time of day.

“Since then, I guess I’ve just been trying to bring some personality to my room, through holiday spirit, snowflake displays, and lots and lots of duct tape.

Also, my room faces directly into the alleyway over the dumpsters, so absolutely no sunlight enters through the windows and frankly it’s a pretty depressing view. Having this whole light display in my room makes it warm and cozy (literally, it’s always like five degrees higher than the rest of the hall) and a lot more homey,” Lu said.
