Fashion Week in the Big Apple

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Penn chapter.

Best time of season and my favorite week in the whole year has arrived with its glamour and glitz: It’s time for fashion week in New York. Fashion is both hot and cold, icy and sparkly, pale and neon. With warm tribal prints, pale silky tops, and neon leather bags and denims, there is something for everyone.

My favorite shows came from Rag and Bone, Helmut Lang and Derek Lam this year with an emphasis on street-smart looks, metallics and layers. Knit leggings were the hottest trend of fashion week for the ones who didn’t want to give up their style despite New York’s cold. As glitter, pins and metallic matched with the glamour and glitz of New York fashion week, citrus bright tops were eye catching too.

Don’t wear Uggs, unless you want to look “slutty,” says this writer

The Alice and Olivia show was marked with the contrast of black and white and the femininity of crème lace that was used nearly in every detail. Milly, on the other hand, was full of neon colors.  I fell in love with the Marc by Marc Jacobs blues. Reed Krakof was certainly one of those who emphasized yellow as the season’s hottest shade. Donna Karan’s show was characterized by natural tones like orange, green and brown on silky fabrics.

Athletic accents and bold floral prints draw so much attention this week on the runway. The sporty and colorful, spandex tops and dresses inspired by surfing outfits make one feel right on the beach. My favorite is the hot pink mini dress with black zippers on both sides that create, a great contrast, from Michael Kors. Floral prints are on blouses, maxi skirts and shoes – basically everywhere. I would say go for the most abstract because tiny, innocent florals are leaving their way to bold and abstract versions. If you don’t like floral prints on you, I would definitely advice you to go for wedges with floral prints on straw heels. They will draw eyes on you for sure. Icy pastels are hot and new! Especially if you’re blonde, icy blues and greens would look great on shorts paired with espadrilles and a white silk shirt – the easiest and coolest way to fashion on a hot day on the beach.

One thing you need to do for sure is to define your waist this season – NY Fashion Week has made it clear. You can either go for high-waist jeans or maxi skirts or just use a thin colorful belt. The classicism of 50’s and 60’s are back. Your closet is getting ready to resemble your moms – maybe even grandma’s, but don’t worry, women of that era know so much more about beauty then we do today. It’s going to be a soft, feminine beauty from now on – red lips, pinky cheeks and natural curves.  As a consequence of this petite purses are back. This signals a quick stop at your mom’s closet asking for her classic Chanel flip bag, 2.55 , Fendi Baguette or vintage Hermes clutch.

Last note on fashion week make up: purple, orange or pink nail polish – make sure you have one to match it both with your brights and icy nudes.
