5 Trending Podcasts Worthy of a Listen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Penn chapter.

Books, newspapers, and music have traditionally been our common sources of entertainment and information, but in recent years, podcasts have stolen the spotlight. Podcasts have become a new source of real-time news and information, as well as entertainment and humor. Whether I’m on my way to class or hanging out at home, podcasts are a perfect answer to boredom. They not only provide personal and intellectual enrichment, but they also help to let go of daily stress. I find myself listening to podcasts during most of my free time, and I could not recommend them enough. I have compiled a list of a few popular podcasts I have been binging and hope that you will love as well!

The Morning Toast

This podcast, hosted by sisters Claudia and Jackie Oshry, gives us “fast five stories” that we need to know before we start our day, i.e. while eating our “morning toast.” Many of you probably know Claudia Oshry due to her well-known Instagram, @girlwithnnojob. If you’ve seen any of her hilarious posts, you won’t be surprised to hear that she delivers that same sense of humor and personality in The Morning Toast. Talking to a largely millennial viewership, the two sisters discuss all things pop culture, 6as well as the latest celebrity news and TV recaps. They also discuss polarizing political issues and current events. This podcast is hilarious and entertaining, but it also provides something to think about in every episode. The Morning Toast goes live weekday mornings at 10:30 AM on Facebook or Youtube, so tune in on your way to class or work and become a true “Toaster!”

The Daily: The New York Times

This daily news podcast is hosted by New York Times political journalist Michael Barbaro and includes interviews with his fellow Times journalists. During these interviews, journalists give a deeper explanation of the topics or current events they covered. The episodes are 20 to 30 minutes long, making this podcast a quick and enjoyable way to stay informed about current events. When you don’t have time  to skim the newspaper or check all of your news apps in the morning, this podcast is a simple and effective substitute. The short episodes also mean there’s no excuse for not keeping up with current events, even during your most hectic mornings!

Serial

This podcast, hosted by Sarah Koenig, is an investigative look into true stories about twisted criminals. Not only is Sarah a captivating story teller, but she also recounts nonfiction narratives that shed a much needed light on the problems with our criminal justice system. Once you start an episode, you will find yourself hanging on to every word and listening until the very end. Although these crime-related stories aren’t for everyone, this podcast does a great job engaging with the listener. The podcast, released every Thursday morning, should definitely be next on your list!

How I Built This: NPR

Ever wondered how to turn your dreams and passions into reality and action? This podcast, hosted by popular journalist and radio host Guy Raz, is definitely a worthwhile listen for all aspiring entrepreneurs, business owners, leaders, and changemakers. Each episode is a narrative of a leader’s journey in starting his or her business, highlighting both failures and accomplishments along the way. Inspirational and practical, the speakers share their stories about following their dreams and accomplishing their goals despite setbacks. A few episodes I found particularly fascinating are Dippin’ Dots: Curt Jones, Burt’s Bees: Roxanne Quimby, SoulCycle: Julie Rice & Elizabeth Cutler, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics: Bobbi Brown, and Live Episode! Glossier: Emily Weiss as well as many others.

These five popular podcasts include everything from current events and daily news to celebrity gossip and life advice. The next time you’re in the car or walking to class, pop your headphones in and tune in to one of these ever entertaining podcasts!
