5 Fashion Trends: Fall 2020

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Penn chapter.

We may be trapped at home and struggling through school online, but who says we can’t look fabulous while doing it? That’s right. It’s time to change out of our sweats and the occasional YouTuber uniform – sweatpants and a nice top – and have our own little Cinderella moment. These five trends started on the runway and have now taken over the fashion world. Take your pick, and you’ll be the new style icon of the season; people will be pinning your video on all your Zoom calls!

Schoolgirl Chic

Think prep school uniform or Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl. The elitist private school uniform look has become very popular this season. The key components of this look are a pleated tennis skirt and a polo or cardigan of some sort. Even better, make any of those argyle print and throw on some long socks and white sneakers, and you’re good to go. To finish off the outfit, put on a headband and grab your favorite mini shoulder bag. Now, you’ve achieved the perfect Schoolgirl Chic outfit. Get ready to go have lunch on the steps of the Met with Blair Waldorf.

Leather Weather

The classic leather jacket is a tried and true staple of most people’s wardrobes, but recently the leather blazer has taken over. This season, leather extends beyond jackets and into just about every category: outerwear, dresses, tops, bralettes, leggings, and of course, pants. Leather pants are especially popular this fall; they come in a variety of different colors, from true black to emerald green and everything in-between. The melina pants from Aritzia in particular seem to be the pants of the season. Everyone, from models to TikTokers, is raving about these straight-leg leather pants.

If you want to add a little edge to your style, try wearing a pair of leather pants or sporting a leather blazer to achieve that badass aesthetic.

Color Stories

Monochromatic sets are the go-to outfits to look sleek and put-together. An all-white or black outfit can be so versatile. With anything from loungewear sets to powersuits, having a one-color look is both chic and effortless. A comfy look that is also presentable to wear in public: this is the best of both worlds, especially considering our current situation. What is there not to like?

The ’90s

They say that fashion is cyclical, and this trend is proof. The ‘90s are back! Looser, wide-leg jeans are back in style, and just about every brand has come out with their very own version of this retro silhouette. These jeans are perfect for the “big pants/little shirt” aesthetic that is popular right now: denim-on-denim, band tees, or anything vintage Nike. These items are flying off the racks both in thrift stores and online. This aesthetic is relatively easy to achieve; you can either buy the pieces or thrift and DIY!

Oversized Everything

Lastly, the oversized trend is going strong this fall as well. The oversized, or boyfriend-style fit, has infiltrated just about every category of clothing. Oversized blazers are especially popular this season; these fit almost like your dad’s old blazer, but chic.

These five are just some of my favorite fall fashion trends so far. Fall fashion is always an exciting trend to follow on social media, from Instagram to TikTok to Pinterest and so many other platforms. You can easily find the inspiration to create your own looks to feel glamorous the next time you want to strut down to your kitchen to grab a snack before online classes.
