34th Street & UTB Editor Sandra Rubinchik

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Penn chapter.

Sandra Rubinchik can be summed up as that quirky, fun girl you know you can always count on for a laugh. Even if you haven’t heard of Sandra, chances are she might have already heard of you; the professional Facebook stalker (she calls it “researching”) is an Ego Editor for 34th Street Magazine and a Senior Editor at Under the Button. When’s she’s not spending her weeknights mooching off her little’s Netflix account, she’s applying to law schools and avoiding the harsh judgment of her Russian-Jewish parents. (Hey, it’s not med school, but it’s definitely a step up from comedian, right?)

Name: Sandra Rubinchik
School: College of Arts and Sciences
Year: 2013
Major: English Major with a Creative Writing Concentration; Legal Studies Minor

So what do you do for 34th Street?
I am a section editor for the Ego section.

What is Ego?
Ego is the campus life section (that’s what we call it because that’s the only thing we can think of to describe it). Every week we choose a senior; basically it’s just someone you should get to know, and it alternates boy-girl.

How is the Ego of the Week chosen?
Egos sort of choose themselves, if that makes sense. It doesn’t, so I’m just gonna go ahead and explain that. They are just someone who is a pretty obvious choice. It’s that person everyone knows on campus; all we do is put a spotlight on them. If you want to get specific, the process is actually super informal. If you know someone super cool or have stalked someone from a distance for four years, just contact an editor, nominate them and they might get chosen in our “lottery system”.

What’s your favorite part of working on Ego?
Ego is a great way to boost my friend count. Each time I meet someone they’ll friend me, and I feel special by association.

Do you write for anything else?
I also work as a Senior Editor at Under the Button (I just got the promotion because I’m a senior, hahaha). I’ve been on board since sophomore year. I love it! I’ve got my finger on the pulse of campus. Our posts are informative, entertaining, digestible and quirky like our student population.

What do you do outside of the DP?
I do A LOT of TV watching. I’m in Zeta, and I also do Model Congress, which is basically an unpaid babysitting job for high school students.

You can always spot me in a crowd because of my… obnoxiously green backpack.
On a typical weeknight I’m… Facebook stalking everyone.
I could eat dumplings forever!
My favorite pace on campus is… the 4th floor carrels at Van Pelt.
My favorite time of the year at Penn is… summer. Everyone should spend at least one summer in Philly.
My perfect day on campus is… a Friday without class.
Penn girls are… the cream of the crop.
Penn guys are… hilarious, interpret as you will.
Last words to the ladies at Penn: It’s okay not to be the same person you were Freshmen year. Or even Junior year.
