After virtually disappearing for the last 10 years, the perfect fall shoe is back! UGGs have always been a huge staple brand for shoes, especially in the early 2000s when UGG boots were all over the media. As trend cycles go, many thought that UGGs would never make a successful comeback because of their ‘cheugy-ness’ and strong associations with 2014 fashion that’s just too recent to be considered vintage. However, the brand has been able to successfully modernize its classic boot into different styles that are in line with recent fashion while still maintaining the classic and nostalgic UGG look.

While the early 2000s were definitely a popular time for UGGs, they actually have a history that goes back far before Y2K and Christian Girl Autumn. The brand UGG was created in the late seventies and its sheepskin boots were actually most popular with surfers! The boots became popular in the mainstream after the 1994 U.S. Winter Olympics Team wore them, and they continued to gain popularity after being spotted on celebrities in the early 2000s (they even got an endorsement from Oprah)! They maintained a strong presence in fashion trends until the trend cycle moved on and they quickly became considered ‘too basic.’

UGGs seemed to disappear from pop culture after that—until that is, they became popular recently on social media. The nostalgia of these boots and their association with early-mid 2000s culture, in addition to their coziness that makes them perfect for cooler weather, has created an Uggs revival!

The classic calf-high UGG boot may be all you can think of when you hear UGGs, but the brand has many different styles to choose from! In terms of popularity, the UGG Classic Ultra Mini is all over my TikTok FYP and for good reason: This style has a low cut which makes them easier to wear with different styles of pants as opposed to the classic high boot. As well, they come in tons of different colours like classic brown or bright pink!

If you want a little more ankle coverage from the chilly Ottawa weather, the UGG Classic Mini is a similar style to the Ultra Minis but goes higher on the ankle. These are the ones I have and would personally recommend since they’re so comfy and warm! Or, if you want UGGs that have a little extra oomph, the UGGs Mini Bailey Bow II Boot has cute bows on the back! My personal favourite is the Tasman because of the super cool embroidery, although it may be more realistic as an indoor slipper due to the low ankle and the high amount of snow we get!

All in all, UGGs have returned to their rightful place as the fall boot. If you’re looking for a comfy shoe to compliment your fall and winter styles, I would definitely recommend checking out their website! And hopefully this UGGs 101 lesson has reconverted you back to an UGG supporter!
