Trick or Treat…For Adults!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

We all loved trick-or-treating when we were young. Running door-to-door and getting loads of delicious candy that gave us energy for weeks and gave our parents multiple headaches. It was most definitely my favorite day in the fall! If only, as university students, we could still trick-or-treat… Well, we can – and this time around, it all goes to a good cause! Every year, hundreds of costume clad adults gather across the country go to door-to-door in their neighborhood, asking for non-perishable food items, all in support of their community’s local food bank. Instead of trick-or-treating, you could trick-or-eat and give back to your community! Although the origins of Halloween are a bit more of a dark nature, using this event to give back to those in need is a great way to incorporate some philanthropy into this awesome day. If you would like to get involved, the SFUO food bank is organizing this awesome event on October 31st. Festivities will kick off at 5:30pm in the UCU Agora and the communities of Sandy Hill, Vanier, and Main Street will be canvassed. To register, please visit trickoreat.ca > register > Ontario > Ottawa > SFUO Food Bank – University of Ottawa. Come dressed in the holiday’s spirit!

Now, after a fun couple hours of canvassing our local neighborhoods and collecting hundreds of non-perishable food items, we will most likely disperse to our respective Halloween parties and events. But what are some spooky and delicious Halloween drinks to be enjoyed? Here are some favourite spook-tastic drink ideas:

1. Blood orange cocktails: a mixture of blood orange juice and orange liqueur to spice up your night!

2. Bloody tooth cocktails: who says your Halloween night needs to be blood free? Mix some rye whisky, pomegranate juice, simple syrup, and lemon juice together and you’ve got yourself a deliciously bloody drink!

3. Red Sangria: we all love sangria, but let’s make a Halloween flavoured one! Red wine of your choice, brandy, club soda, orange juice, and sliced oranges and apples will get your head spinning on Halloween night. Just make sure not to spill any on your costume!
