Three Restaurants You Need To Check Out This Holiday Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Exams are over: HALLELUJAH, WE’VE MADE IT TO THE END OF ANOTHER SEMESTER! Now what to do with all this free time that we have all of a sudden?

I know it’s tempting to sleep in every day, laze around the house, and catch up on all our favourite Netflix shows, but don’t do that. For those of you who aren’t going away on vacay, Ottawa has way too much to offer for you to just sit around the house. Museums and art galleries have free entry every Thursday afternoon after five, you can do a little sight seeing around town and check out the sacred and religious sights (some of the old churches are really beautiful), or you can head downtown and check out some of the amazing restaurants.

January is just around the corner so before reality hits us like a brick to the face, gather up some of your girlfriends and go out for some good food and drinks. Maybe when it comes to eating out, you’re happy to settle for Kelsey’s (great daiquiris by the way) or Swiss Chalet, and there is nothing wrong with casual dining, but there are some really great restaurants in Ottawa that you don’t want to miss out on. So in anticipation the holiday break, here are three of my favourite places to go eat:

1. Play, Food, & Wine

I had to start off the list with this one because it’s my favourite restaurant! I went here for my best-friend’s birthday and I found that even though the restaurant is a bit on the pricey end (especially if you’re a student), the food was amazing and the service was great. If you’re looking for a place for girls’ night out, Play is a real treat.

Favourite Menu Items: Don’t even bother looking at the drinks menu, just order the Sangria, trust me. Their steak is also pretty good.

2. Wilf and Adas

Brunch is my favourite thing in the world, and Wilf and Ada’s is my favourite brunch spot in Ottawa. I’ve only been once, yet I still find myself daydreaming about the eggs Florentine. I don’t know if it’s always busy, but when I went with friends, we had to wait about  45 minutes before we got seated. It was still totally worth it though: the price was reasonable, the food was great and the portions were more than enough!

Favourite Menu Items: I ordered The Classic which was great, but I also had a bite of my friends eggs Florentine and it was heavenly.

3. The Standard Tavern

I recently went here for a friend’s birthday and I loved it. We were a group of 13 and our waiter was super patient and amazing. Also, the moment the DJ started playing a ‘90s RnB mix, I knew that we had come to the right place. If you’re in the mood to just let loose and party, this is definitely the place for you.

Favourite Menu Item: Fish Tacos & Fries; basic but yummy.

We’ve got some time before we have to chin up and get back into the university grind, but before the reality of student life sets in, I think we’re all in need of a night out with friends. Ottawa is littered with amazing restaurants, begging you to just check them out. We survived another exam season, but second semester is right around the corner and I can already feel it breathing down my neck. I think we all deserve a reward for our hard work so round up some of your girlfriends, check out some of these restaurants and throw back a couple of shots…or maybe just a glass of wine for those of you who want to keep it classy?

Happy eating, happy drinking, and happy holidays!
