There’s a Colouring Book for That

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

In such a technologically driven society, it’s important to take the time and unplug every once in a while. Ideally shutting off your phone and laptop should be able to rid you of all distractions so you can focus on your day (like what you should be doing in class instead of scrolling through Instagram and facebook), but sometimes you may need a little more help zoning in because it’s too easy to zone out.

The actual definition of mindfulness is a little difficult to narrow down. Essentially, it is the practice of remaining present and conscious. It is the direction of our attention that encompasses all of our activities so we are aware of all of our actions in that moment. Think of it as the opposite of mindlessness.

Mindfullness is a great way to practice self-care because it has tons of mental and physical health benefits. Since mindfulness attempts to zero in on your present state, it’s easier to not worry about the future or the past. It’s also a good way to practice becoming completely engaged in activities, rather than being on auto-pilot while our brain is elsewhere.

Mindfulness also has the ability to reduce stress, improve your sleep cycle, concentration and lower blood pressure. It’s used to help treat anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse issues due to the fact that it helps to presently address maladaptive thinking, thus eradicating negative thoughts.

My favourite way to practice mindfulness is bringing it back to my childhood, and colouring.

You can find these adult colouring books anywhere from Dollarama to Chapters in all different sizes and themes. I personally, am a proud owner of 3 colouring books ranging from complicated intricate doodles to cats and underwater sea creatures. From swear words to Harry Potter, there’s a colouring book for whatever you need. Colouring is a stress free activity that reduces the fear center in the brain, which allows your mind to actually rest. It also allows you to channel your creativity in a simple way that isn’t too daunting to actually start.

I keep a 10 pack of pencil crayons and a small colouring book in my backpack in case I need a study break. It’s an easy pick me up. Colouring is an easy way to distract yourself from your other distractions, and it gives you a chance to relax and focus on being a little artsy and creative. Bringing back your inner child has never been so healthy!

There are lot’s of other ways to implement mindfulness into your life. Through common breathing exercises like guided meditation, relaxing music, or simple mind games that allow you to focus like a crossword or a Sudoku. Not only is there a colouring book, but there’s also an app for that!

If you’ve forgotten to take time for yourself today, here’s your reminder: enjoy at least 10 minutes of something enjoyable, mindful and stress free.
