Spring Yourself Into Spring Fashion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

After a long winter that seemed never ending, dark, and cold…spring is finally here! This spring, fashion themes seem to be bright, bold and dynamic. Crop tops, sheer fabrics, fringe, and exaggeration seem to be a common theme among all designers, from New York to Paris.

Hopefully you’ve been working out all winter, because this spring it’s all about showing what you’ve got. Bare midriffs are here to stay for Spring and Summer. Crop tops have been statement pieces on all runways, including Diane Von Frustenburg, DKNY, BCBG Max Azaria, Narciso Rodriguez, and Jill Stuart.

Another very common fashion trend on runways this Spring is sheer fabrics. The winter has been very cold, and covering up was just part of our everyday routine, but thankfully, this is now a thing of the past. Sheer shirts and dresses are perfect compromise of demure and sporty, another trend seen on Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, 3.1 Phillip Lim,  Theyskens’ Theory, and Reed Krakoff.

Wide leg trousers are back, but this time with a modern twist: white coloured leg trousers. These are perfect for elongating shorter frames, and comfortable to wear. Derek Lam, Calvin Klein, Daks, Reed Krakoff, and BCBG Max Azaria have featured these trousers in their collections.

Graphic patterns are another trend this Spring that have been everywhere, particularly in black and white. The trend was seen on Proenza Schouler, Edun, Diane Von Frustenburg, Ralph Lauren, and Zimmerman.

Fringe has been a consistent statement piece for years, and it’s a great addition for great for this Spring. Designers such as, Hervé Léger, 3.1 Phillip Lim,  Proenza Schouler, Calvin Klein, and Altuzzara are big fans of fringe.

To add a little shine without the bronzer this Spring, embellished details seem to be a better alternative. Beaded and bedazzled jewels have been seen on dresses on the Wes Gordon runways, skirts on the Tibi runway, 3.1 Phillip Lim was more subtle by adding beading on the sides of shirts, and necklines at Tory Burch.

Lastly, large wall flower prints. Not just for your grandmother’s tablecloths anymore, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Rebecca Taylor, Micheal Kors, and Dennis Bors seem have added their two cents to this trend, putting flowers on anything and everything.

So get ready this Spring to work it and strut down the streets in risqué crop tops, sheer panels, wide leg trousers and add some sophistication with graphic prints when you’re feeling daring. Fringe for bringing the wild wild west to the city, beaded and jeweled clothing to shine bright like a diamond, and large floral prints because you know what they say…”April showers bring May flowers”.
