We all know Mark Ruffalo as one of our favourite actors, from his role as Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his role in Thirteen Going on Thirty, and even his appearances in Now You See Me. However, not many people know about Mark Ruffalo’s extracurricular activities.
Mark Ruffalo is an avid activist for climate change! He spends his time between shooting and directing films fighting for our planet. Ruffalo himself stated that his passion for fighting for the environment began in 2011 when he became aware of how water was being contaminated in industrial processes. In 2011, Ruffalo took this newfound passion and established Water Defense, an organization which was dedicated to banning hydraulic fracturing in New York State. Water Defense spoke to the public about many communities and their lack of clean water, including Flint, Michigan.
It also had a large influence in Colorado, which led to Ruffalo supporting other organizations in Colorado including, Frack Free Colorado, an anti-fracking coalition.
Over the years, Ruffalo has travelled the country fighting for a cleaner earth. On numerous occasions he has spoken in front of the United States Congress speaking about fracking, and the need to control certain substances.
In June 2015, Ruffalo partnered with Leonardo DiCaprio in creating the event “100%” in New York. Here, they advocated for clean and renewable energy by informing the public of its affordability.
Ruffalo’s activism does not end at the environment. He was seen supporting Standing Rock in 2018, along with many other Indigenous communities battling with pipelines. In addition, he has supported women’s reproductive rights throughout the United States, stating he is pro-choice.
