Jen Lau: Inspiring the Greek Community On and Off Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

One of the few secrets of uOttawa is the size of our Greek community. The University of Ottawa has hundreds of active sisters and brothers in various local and international sororities and fraternities. One of these sisters has done some amazing work within her sorority, but also within the University of Ottawa’s community and deserves credit for her wonderful work.

Jen Lau, the incoming president of the uOttawa chapter of Delta Delta Delta International Women’s Fraternity, is a second year Health Sciences student and a native of Burlington, ON. Moving to a university is hard for any student; however, Jen tackled this problem by involving herself in many facets of student life. While studying Health Sciences, Jen’s goal is to go to law school, and as such, she sits as the VP Social for the Pre-Law society.

While law serves as one of her passions, her university experience would not be the same without the support of her sisters. For Tri Delta, Jen served this year as the social chair, organizing mixers with various fraternities and other social events such as semi-formal and formal dinners that improved the experience of her fellow sisters. She also served as the licensing chair, ensuring that Tri Delta’s name, symbols, and insignia are always presented in a positive light.

Jen is now the incoming president of Tri Delta’s uOttawa chapter, and hopes to give other sisters the same experience she has had as a sister. Feeling as though she has improved a lot over the past year, Jen hopes to give back to the organization that has given her so much. Over reading week, Jen will travel to Dallas, Texas to attend the Collegiate Leadership Conference and meet Tri Delta sisters from across North America to learn from them and bring back that experience to uOttawa.

Wanting to improve the Greek community within uOttawa, Jen also serves as the Public Relations Chair and Academics Chair for the uOttawa Greek Council. As Academics Chair, Jen motivates academic success within the Greek community. She is currently fundraising to offer a scholarship to one outstanding Greek, by selling calendars which feature uOttawa’s Greek organizations.

As the most recent Public Relations Chair, Jen carries the responsibilities of writing a newsletter to update the University of Ottawa Greek Community, updating the twitter and facebook pages, creating a brochure for new members, hosting a poker night fundraiser, and leading a workshop on internal and external public relations for the uOttawa Greek Convention.

When asked about what motivated her to join Tri Delta, Jen gave two answers: first, she was inspired by Tri Delta’s goal of raising $15 million over 5 years for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and second, to meet new people and make lifelong friendships

Only a second year student, Jen still has over two years to continue her immense contribution to uOttawa. Not only has she already left a big imprint in the school community, but she is extraordinarily modest about what she has done and will do. If you are ever interested in getting involved in sorority life, Jen is the perfect person to contact and the perfect person to get inspired by!
