How to Incorporate Plaid into your Wardrobe

Winter is among us and as the cool weather hits, we switch up our shorts for tights and crop tops for longer sleeves. While I enjoy breaking out my sweaters after their long summer slumber, I am most excited to wear plaid again. I know many girls who pull off plaid in the summer flawlessly, but to me it feels wrong. Whether you’re a plaid newbie or a seasoned veteran, we all have our favourite ways when it comes to styling this seasonal print.

And so, without further ado, I have listed my favourite ways to incorporate plaid into my closet..

Flannel Shirt

The most popular choice once the weather gets cooler: the flannel shirt, which is the “it girl” of fall and winter fashion. The combinations for this piece are endless. I personally enjoy mixing mine with a leather skirt. It adds a nice feminine touch to a shirt that is normally reserved for a lumberjack. A few of my favourite places to shop for flannel are Urban Outfitters, Eddie Bauer, and of course, my boyfriend’s closet ;)

Plaid Skirt

This style screams “Clueless” and it’s perfect. I have been fully embracing my inner Cher by paring my skirt with knee highs and sweaters. But one of the main reasons I love this style so much is that it is extremely versatile. Depending on your mood, you can style the skirt with knee highs and booties for a girly feel, or combat boots and tights for a more edgy look. I’ve found some wonderful choices at Gap, Forever 21 and Aeropostale.

Scarf

A scarf is the easiest way to add a touch of flair to your outfit, and I love that they can be worn all times throughout the day. If you’re uneasy about trying out plaid, a scarf is the perfect way to ease into the trend. I found the best, coziest plaid scarf from Zara. It cost a pretty penny but it is the best purchase I have made this season! I have also seen other options at H&M and Joe Fresh that are less expensive but just as cozy.

Dress

If you are you a faithful follower of the plaid trend, then feel free to step up your plaid game with this option. Dress it up with some tights, boots and top it off with a hat, or dress it down with a jean jacket and a pair of sneakers. My personal favourite is a plaid dress with a peter pan collar, adds just the right amount of girly touch. Guess, Gap and Smart Set all offer some wonderful and stylish options.

Cape

Capes are having a major moment this season, and what better way to embrace this season’s hottest jacket with its most timeless print. Capes are a wonderful type of coat because you can wear them with literally anything. From jeans and heels to a mini and boots, the cape will quickly become your favourite fall jacket. To shop this ultimate autumn coat, look to shops like The Limited, Anthropologie and Etsy.

Which style will you try first? Be sure to share your look with us on Twitter and Instagram. We’d love to see you rocking this wonderful print!

XO, Kristen
