Hottest Spring Trends: Add a Makeup “Spring” in your Step

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Ladies, it’s time to talk about the trends. The question on everyone’s mind is “what’s hot for spring 2013?” Well, we survived 2012…now it’s time to majorly amp up the beauty! Let’s get it going!

What’s hot: red lips!

It’s no secret that red lips are alluring and sensual…but most importantly, they never go out of style! With the many different shades available on the market today, the shade flatters every skin tone. As bold as the colour is, one can choose to go sheer for day time but then go sultry and bold for nighttime. As seen on the Red Carpet at the Grammys of this year, Rihanna is rocking the trend. You don’t have to be afraid of red lips, just take it in stride!

Some tips for first-timers:

  1. Don’t be afraid, Red lipstick (or any darker lipstick) is all about making it your own, whether you choose to sport it every day or occasionally is totally up to you! Go sheer, go bright, go bold!
  2. It’s not just for glam girls. Whether your fashion style is chic and on-trend or grudgy and glam, I’d recommend trying this trend out. For chic girls, a classic poppy red lip and a neutral eye is the way to go! It’s cute, it’s simple and it’s easy. For grungier girls, go for a sexy winged eyeliner look and a lipstick with bluer-undertones. The blue reflex in the red and gives the look more of an edge rather than a glam “wow” factor. It can spice up any look because it is deeply dark and sultry. The eyeliner, as a finishing touch, provides just enough edge to keep you rocking on through the day.
  3.  There are no rules. Be fierce, ladies. It’s all you! Don’t listen to what people say, you do “you”! As the wise Yves Saint-Laurent once said. “Fashions fade, but style is eternal!”

What’s hot: bare faced!

Calling all beauties! According to Fashion Week, bare-faced and luminous skin is the way to hit it this spring!

Those who are fans of the “no-makeup” trend are in for a treat! The natural faced look is all the rage on the fashion runways and you can achieve it too. It’s all about “looking” like you have no makeup on, but there’s a bit more work put into it than that.
For this look, the main goal is to perfect the skin. By way of foundation and concealer, completely perfect your skin and conceal any and all blemishes. The face must be completely smooth and unmarred because you want to add glow back into the face. What highlighter does (and no, no neon-green ones over here) is it makes your cheekbones stand out. When swept across the top of the cheeks, it adds amazing youth and luminosity to the skin. Essentially, skin looks healthy! And who doesn’t want that?

I recommend the Soft and Gentle Mineralize Skin Finish (left) from MAC cosmetics ($28).For a more budget-conscious item, I recommend the Hard Candy Baked Bronzer (right) in Tiki ($8). Despite the misnomer, the product is not in fact a bronzer but adds a healthy shine to the skin.

What’s hot: Eyeliner

This season, it’s all about the sassiness that comes with liner. Whether you’re a classic black kind of gal or you like to spice it up with bold jets of colourful strokes, you’re right on trend. Fashion week sees this trend in gorgeous hues of green and blue along with crazy geometric cuts. Go thick, go thin or go crazy but dare to be inspired by the runway? I think so!

What’s hot: Lashes

Full and thick is the way to go.

Also, don’t forget! Lash curlers. As scary as they look on the outside, the great benefit that comes with the end result is not. Lash curlers emphasize your natural thickness and help any loose ones from going astray. Trust me-you’ll want to use this tip. I guarantee you’ll love it.

Trends are constantly changing. One thing that is always true, however, is that many trends come back in style. No matter if you choose to keep up with them or not, beauty and fashion is all about taking a trend and manipulating it to your own desires. What looks fantastic on your best friend may look good on you to, but even better with some tweaking.

We’re all in university now so why not take the opportunity to try a new you? Go for it because being beautiful and confident is, after all, part of the reason why you exist.
