Holy Chic! 7 Fashion DIYs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

I think I’ve always been a fan of DIYs. When I was little, I used to go to drop-in classes at Michael’s with my grandmother and I always took a variety of craft classes at summer camp. Now, getting crafty is my go-to creative outlet. From homemade face masks to ombre-painted furniture, I do it all. I could spend hours hunting at local thrift shops for hidden trinkets and even more time scrolling endlessly through Pinterest to find the perfect projects to upgrade my wardrobe and my apartment.

If you happen to feeling crafty, here are a few DIYs I’m excited to try out this summer!

1. Graphic Shirt

Creating your own graphic tee is probably the easiest and most popular DIY ever. The possibilities of things to put on your shirt are endless. One of my favourite DIYs is the Creme De La Creme sweatshirt, which is very similar to one I saw Beyonce wear back in 2013! If you’re just looking for a basic DIY tutorial, check out this one by Studio DIY.

2. Cute Clutch

If I’m being honest, clutches are my kryptonite. I have about a dozen different ones that I’ve collected from various shops over the years, but I’ve also started making my own as well. It’s easy to upgrade an old clutch by adding some eye-catching gold lettering or you can make your own leather clutch from scratch.

3. Revamped Denim

Ever since I saw Blake Lively rocking these $500 paint splattered jeans, I’ve been obsessed with denim DIYs. There’s an awesome tutorial by Brit + CO to copy Blake’s jeans. Adding polka dots is also a cute alternative. If you don’t want to use paint, here’s a tutorial that uses a bleach pen to achieve a faded look!

4. Iron Transfer Tote

There are so many cute quotes that would look great on an old tote and it’s super easy to make one yourself. Whether you want a simple quote on your tote or a larger graphic, these tutorials are simple to follow and the results are fantastic.

5. Flower Crown

I know not everyone is into flower crowns, but I think they’re absolutely adorable. Whether you’re attending a music festival or just feel like channeling a bohemian look, flower crowns are a perfect accessory for the summer. There is one tutorial using a simple wire and another one with a tweed crown.

6. Floral Sunglasses

Another floral-inspired DIY is a pair of floral shades! You can either add a little floral accent or go all out with an entire arrangement.

7. Embellished Collar

Finally, add a little sparkle to one of your collared shirts. You can update one of the many chambray denim shirts you own or embellish one of those adorable chiffon button ups.

Fashion DIYS are awesome, because you’re not only creating something for yourself, but you can also potentially save a few bucks. It’s a win-win situation! Happy DIYing collegiettes!
