This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

In honour of our Co-President and Editor-in-Chief leaving for a semester abroad in South Africa, we’re featuring her as our Campus Celebrity this week! As of December 20, Liz will be leaving Canada for South Africa where she’ll be interning with the Cape Town Refugee Centre, a partner of the United Nations, and (hopefully) frolicking with penguins on the beaches!

Her Campus: How long have you been involved with Her Campus uOttawa?

Elizabeth: I’ve been involved since it began in the Fall of 2012. Back then it was only the Editor-in-Chief, Olivia, and a few other members. It’s been great to see it grow into such a strong organization with 65 staff members!

Her Campus: What else are you involved in on campus?

Elizabeth: I’m a member of the Board of Administration (BOA), which is the highest student-elected decision-making body at the University. I’m a representative for the Faculty of Social Sciences. I’m also the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) for the Economics Students’ Association and the Political Studies School rep for another Federated Body on campus. I am also involved with the IPPSSA and was head guide for this year’s 101 week.

Her Campus: What are you studying and what do you plan on doing after graduation?

Elizabeth: I’m doing a double-major in Economics and Political Science. After graduation I’d love to go to graduate school in Europe and study international economic relations.

Her Campus: What’s your favorite go-to place in Ottawa for brunch?

Elizabeth: During the week, Fathers & Sons, of course, for the breakfast special, but on the weekend you can’t go wrong with Sandy Hill Lounge and Grill. The eggs benedict is unreal.

Her Campus: What’s your favorite thing about Her Campus?

Elizabeth: The number of people I’ve met from being involved in this organization has been amazing. I’ve had the opportunity to network with so many organizations and individuals that we’ve collaborated with on our many events and the staff members are all super driven, passionate and fun.

Her Campus: Where’s your go-to spot for a night out?

Elizabeth: 1848 or La Maison. They’re both close and have super cheap drink specials. You can’t go wrong. Shameless Night at Babylon is also a great one.

Her Campus: What are you most excited to do on your trip next semester?

Elizabeth: I’m pretty excited to not have to experience another brutal Ottawa winter. It’ll be nice to be able to go to the beach in January. Plus, there’s penguins there. I’m also really excited about the work I’ll be doing. I’ll be helping Central African asylum seekers set up their own businesses, which will hopefully be a really rewarding experience!

We’re going to miss Liz beyond belief but we’re so excited about her next big adventure! HCxoxoxo
