Halloween is just around the corner, and that means PARTY TIME! But before the party, everyone spends hours and days of finding the right accessories and outfits for their special Halloween costume. Halloween make up is another very interesting way to spice up that scary yet sexy costume of yours! The preparation of Halloween can be costly in terms of hosting parties, buying a costume, make up, accessories, hair, and much more!
Nowadays, everyone’s creativity has noticably kicked in – meaning the trend of DIY costumes! For those who are not aware of what DIY means, the term simply stands for “do it yourself”. In regards to Halloween, DIY costumes are fashionable and fun. As University students, spending money on Halloween costumes can be very costly. Thus, a common place to buy parts for your costume would be thrift stores such as Value Village. They advertise DIY costumes frequently throughout this time of year. There are many things you can find to get an attractive, yet spooky costume on a lower budget! Below I have some suggestions on ways to be sexy and spooky during this Halloween!
Dramatic make-up – this adds major effect to your costume! Heavy dark eyes and dark lips painted with evil sharp looking eye brows can complete your look. Try using colours such as black, maroon, brown, and purple! Also, using white face powder will make you look zombie-like. If you do a great job on your face make-up, you won’t even have to invest in an outfit. Just throw on some tatterd clothes and go as one of the undead.
Dark, long robes/capes/shawls/dresses and old clothing – For example, a gypsy costume needs no sewing and its components can be found around the house! Look for old clothing that you can turn into a shirt or a bandana or even make rings using paper.
Hats and Wigs – Perfect to add that old, evil look using a black or purple coloured hat with net, along with dark makeup on the face. Hats used as a costume are a great way to add some fun, especially if you don’t feel like doing your hair! You can wear a wig of any dark colour and top it off with a big hat. Or most popular, a witch hat for females styled with long strands of hair on the sides. There is a variety of funky hats you can find at thrift stores such as Value Village for less than half the price you would be spending at a party store for a brand new hat! Have some fun making your own costume and accessories! Â
Masks and Veils – Masks are always used in movies and cartoons – they bring suspense to a person’s character. They hide our identity and make us become someone else. Why not transform into someone else on Halloween night? Moreover, you can make masks yourself at home! Some supplies you can use to create your mask are construction paper, aluminium foil, scissors, markers, and stickers. It’s simple, cheap and easy! Veils are also a great item to use for your Halloween costume. You can re-use a piece of cloth you already have lying around the house, or buy a piece of fabric from the store – under $10 for sure!
Stylized Headbands – You can make these using any craft supplies, they’re easy and cheap! Just make sure your outfit complements the colour of the headband you are wearing! For example, if you are looking to be a gypsy, using a colourful headband would look great for your Halloween costume. Dig up one of your old headbands you used to wear as a kid and wrap some ribbons around it to achieve the look you are going for. You can even cut shapes out of paper and stick them to the headband, like the classic cat ears. If you are looking for something more girly, buy some plastic flowers and attach them to the headband. With a floral headband you can dress up as fairy or go as Lana Del Ray! The look was very popular in the spring and summer, but you can easily revive it for Halloween.
There you have it folks, hope these DIY costume ideas can help with planning for this year’s Halloween event. Hope you have a fun and safe Halloween everyone – and don’t get too hyper on all the Halloween candy!Â
