Cozy Staples To Splurge On This Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Ottawa gets called many things…beautiful, historic, family-friendly.

Warm, however, isn’t usually thrown into that mix.

From October to March, those of us who choose to live in the nation’s capital are forced to endure frosty winds, constant snow, and nightfall at 4 o’clock. I’m not trying to be dramatic, but winter in Ottawa somehow even makes Mercury Retrograde seem bearable.

There is a silver lining to this whole five-months-of-petrifying-cold thing. Ottawa’s chilly months make the perfect excuse to treat yourself!

In this city, investing in a collection of warm, well-made winter staples can do wonders. These classic pieces are sure to keep you cozy on campus – or, let’s be real, during those impossibly long OC Transpo commutes.

Splurging on timeless, versatile looks can also help shift your wardrobe away from fast-fashion, and the harmful impact it has on the environment. Every year, 11 tons of clothing end up polluting landfills. Switching to a minimalist wardrobe will ensure your clothes get more wear and have a longer life, making your carbon footprint just that much smaller. Although it might seem like a major investment in the moment, a consciously selected closet has the power to save you money in the long run.

When it comes to fashion, sometimes less is more. These splurge-worthy pieces are sure to last all winter, and will bring you one step closer to sustainable style.
