Campus Celebrity: The uOttawa Field Hockey Club

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

If you didn’t know we had a field hockey club at the University of Ottawa, now you know. I heard about this club at the end of last year’s winter semester, and I was surprised to learn that they were not a very well known club. So, this year, I decided to sit down with their president, Moyandi, and two others club member, Harriet and Katie.

Her Campus: Ladies, it is so nice to meet you.
Moyandi: Likewise, thank you for meeting with us.

(Left to right: Harriet, Moyandi & Katie)

Her Campus: What is the mission of the club?
Moyandi: Honestly, the club is here to promote field hockey and the benefit of it.
Harriet: This sport is very popular sport in high schools. However, in post-secondary schools, not as much.
Moyandi: We just want to bring it more recognition, but also perhaps make our team a competitive one, an intramural team.

Her Campus: So, for those who don’t know, what is field hockey?
Katie: To make it very simple, field hockey is like a mix of soccer and hockey. We have the same strategies and position that both sports use.

HC: Why did you start the club?
H: When we came to university, I was pretty bummed that there wasn’t a field hockey team so…
M: Our former president, Diyyinah decided to start the team in 2013.

HC: What do you like most out of this sport?
H: First, it is so much fun and it really test your fitness ability.
M: Also, it doesn’t require a lot of equipment.
K: It’s good to have a place that you can have fun and to have a team that encourages and supports you.

HC: Is it an all-girls team?
M: For now, we only have girls on the team.
H: I don’t know why, but no guys seems to want to join the team…
K: However, we do want boys on the team and we encourage them to contact us.

HC: How many people are in the club?
K: Like in a soccer game, there is only eleven people on the field when it’s game team.
H: However, we are more than 50 members in the club so when there is game, we rotate a lot so everyone gets a chance to play.

HC: Are you recruiting members?
M: We are always looking for people to join our club.

HC: What are the fees to be a members?
M: Our goal is to make the club very affordable so it can be accessible to most people.
K: Exactly like Moyandi said, our membership is low so we don’t drive students away that’s why the fees are about 30$.

HC: Finally, what would you like to tell students to encourage to join the club?
H: There is no doubt that it’s a good bonding activity and fitness, too.
K: We have social activities like Christmas potlucks and other fun events.
M: Just give us a try; you will like it.

If you want to join the club, you can contact the field hockey team here.

Follow them on Twitter or Facebook for more updates on their regular practice and events.
