Bored of Starbucks PSLs? Try this Instead.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

From taking pictures with pumpkins to breaking out our chunkiest scarves – even when it’s still warm out – this time of year tends to bring out the #basic in all of us (guilty as charged!) Hey, I’m not about to judge. Is there anything better than cozying up by the fireplace with a warm, toasty fall drink? No, there is absolutely not, sis!

This October, I’ve found myself defaulting to a classic PSL – Pumpkin Spiced Latte – when I need a caffeine fix. It’s seriously a problem, and I’ve been nervous (dare I say it – scared?) to venture beyond the doors of my local Starbs and try something new. But, in the name of good journalism, I knew it had to be done; reusable mug in hand, I embarked on a quest to round up Ottawa’s yummiest fall beverages.

These drinks are sure to spice up your autumn and help you reach Peak Fall Vibes™. Try them out and let us know what you think!

Nordstrom Ebar – The Maple Latte

The Nordstrom Ebar is often ignored by commuters rushing to the Mackenzie King bus station, but it’s home to some real hidden gems. One sip of this sweet latte and you’ll be instantly transported to a sugar bush. Trust me, this maple-brown sugar mix is the best flavour combo since PB & J – and that’s a bold claim.

Bridgehead – The Matcha Tea Latte

This drink is nothing new, but somehow Bridgehead manages to make it feel like a novelty. The matcha is so smooth, not at all bitter and perfectly combined with warm milk – every time! Bonus: matcha is pretty high in antioxidants and even has more caffeine than coffee or regular green tea! Count me IN.

Happy Goat Coffee Company – The Hot Apple Cider

What screams autumn more than a warm apple cider? Enjoy this drink made from local apples on a chilly afternoon or when your go-to double espresso is just a tad too strong. The perfect mix of fruit and fall spice!

David’s Tea – The Deep Purple Tea

Smooooke on the watterrrr…and by that I mean the steam rolling off this spooky, magical Deep Purple tea from David’s! Sip this tea hot for an enchanting flavour experience, featuring a mix of Kenyan Purple Tea, lemon, licorice and even blueberry! If you’re not sold on the flavour, get this: Deep Purple takes on a mystical lavender colour when it steeps!

Cafe Qui Pense – The Fall Spice Latte

This Main Street cafe is so indie and as cute as can be! Pick up a Fall Spice Latte for a taste of Thanksgiving – but without the strong pumpkin syrup flavours that most coffee shops use this time of year. Find yourself a table and settle in with a good book at the cafe, or take your coffee with you. Just don’t blame us if this simple drink turns you into a Cafe Qui Pense regular!

Ok, yes. I know I said this was an article about what to drink when you don’t want a PSL. But trust me, this one’s different. Rich fall spices and pumpkin flavour make this PSL taste like Grandma’s pie all blended up in coffee form! Ask for an extra shot of espresso for something a little stronger. You’ll love every sip – especially since you’ll be supporting a local Ottawa business! What could be better than that?

Happy sipping, friends!
