This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.
Looking for something else to check out after Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter, or Her Campus etc.? Here’s an idea; start following some of these blogs, websites, and podcasts for when your news feed slows down.
Below are a few suggestions on various blogs you can follow. Don’t forget to also check out all of their other social media outlets!
1. RachSpeed
How about a fashion blog created by Rachel, a fellow collegiette from Toronto, Ontario? If you’re looking for all things fashion, DIY, and style look no further! Especially if you want to get the inside scoop on Toronto Fashion week.
2. Briticisms
Journalist, essayist, and editor Britt Julious provides overall awesomeness and commentary on independent and avant-garde music, art, and culture. As an accomplished writer who’s written for Vice, Noisey, and The Guardian, you should defiantly read Britt’s personal blog to find out her thoughts on boy bands, guilty pleasures, and her favourite authors.
If you love travelling, follow Pauline’s blog to vicariously explore all of the places you wish you could visit. Not only does she post beautiful pictures, she tells stories and lets you in on all of the cool hotspots of the dozens countries she’s already been to.
Is it weird that I listen to podcasts? Sometimes I just need something to do while I’m painting my nails. Here are a few podcasts to listen to for when you just want to chill.
BlackGirlsTalking describes itself as “a pop culture podcast wherein 4 black women discuss representations of people of colour in various forms of media”. While some may be apprehensive about the subject matter, BlackGirlsTalking invites you into hilarious, thought provoking, and deep conversations in a way that makes you feel like you’re overhearing a night in between friends.
5. SwoonStep
A music coverage podcast featuring opinions of women? Hell yes! Listen to Megan and Crystal as they offer insight on music trends, current events in music, and discuss their latest musician crushes.
Foodies unite! Louise Chu and Monica Eng are food journalists that “tackle cooking, dining, culture food policy, culinary characters and more”.
One of the nice things about compilation websites like Her Campus is the variety of things you can read about on them. Below are two compilation websites that offer pieces ranging from serious, to funny, to insightful, to thoughtful, as well as karaoke videos, weekly video segments and much more!
Founded by actress Zoey Deschanel, writer Molly McAleer, and producer Sophia Rossi, HelloGiggles is “a positive online community for women” covering “crafting projects, sex and relationships, pop culture, pets, TV, movies, nostalgia, fandoms, and tips on savvy and stylish living meant to inspire a smile”. They also have their own podcast called All New Friends.
8. Rookie Mag
As the 3 year old brainchild of a now 18 year old Tavi Gevinson, Rookie Mag is a monthly themed online magazine featuring articles, interviews, collages, photo editorials, and illustrations surrounding pop culture, friendship, music, feminism, growing pains etc. You might find some of your celeb girl crushes in interviews, or spot your favourite stars in a candid segment called “Ask a Grown Woman/Man”.
Those are a few of my personal favourites, but comment below with your thoughts about them or mention others you’d want to add to the list.
