6 Things to Do to Get You in the Holiday Spirit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

It’s that time of year again! Where the bells are jingling, and the lights are shining as bright as can be. You can finally feel the holiday spirit set in. In between the early holiday shopping and the hectic exam season, there are still many things you can do to get a jumpstart into the holiday spirit this year!

1. Decorate, Decorate, Decorate!

What better time to decorate than right now? Halloween decorations are gone, and Christmas decorations are rolling in! Go to your nearest dollar store or Walmart and go crazy on the décor aisle; snowmen, mistletoe, tinsel, you name it! Anything and everything will make your apartment or house look extremely cozy.

2. Speaking of decorating, why not set up your tree a little earlier this year?

If you have a tree at home, no better time than right now to decorate it. You can enjoy the lovely decorations for the duration of the whole month and maybe through New Year’s! Everyone knows it will get extremely hectic during December with it being exam season at all, so get a head start on your tree while you can!

3. Put on some holiday tunes.

Launch your Spotify and start getting into the holiday spirit by playing a Christmas playlist! No doubt you’ll feel especially joyful while studying to the catchy song of “Last Christmas” or why not try dancing to a couple of Glee Christmas songs? Either way, crank those holiday tunes like it’s no one’s business!

4. Watch some holiday movies.

I remember tuning in every day in December time on Family Channel when I was younger, only to be bombarded by the massive amount of Christmas movies being played over and over again; it was always a staple in my holiday traditions. Why not watch a classic like Home Alone or A Christmas Carol? Many choices, and all of them good!

5. Start planning a Secret Santa among your friends

Typically every year, my group of friends plan a Secret Santa well in advance. We all go to different schools and meet up around twice in a year. If your group does Secret Santa, start planning it now! That way, you can take advantage of the holiday sales or Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales! Plus it’s so fun to give to someone else! It will make you feel giddy just thinking about it!

6. Bake holiday cookies!

Search up a recipe online and start baking! It’s such a nice family/roommate bonding activity. It takes some stress off during this hectic season, and plus you have some amazing cookies to indulge in after your hard labour. You can also bake some extras to give away to your friends! Giving is the heart of the holiday season!
