11 Things Only Fashion Lovers Understand About Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

When you live in a place that has a full-throttle winter, i.e. ice, snow, and freezing rain, there is virtually no way to “winterize” your summer wardrobe because those two wardrobes are complete separate entities, like Romeo and Juliet, they’ll never be together. There is no “just adding layers” to your summer outfits to combat a -40°C wind chill. Winter fashion tips are virtually unusable and pretty laughable…wear your summer sandals and just add tights? Yeah…okay. Turn a summer dress into a winter skirt by adding a cute sweatshirt on top…in what world? If you consider yourself being somewhat of a fashion connoisseur and, simultaneously, you find yourself violently hating the season of winter because it cramps your style you will feel this article on a personal level. These are eleven things fashion lovers understand about hating the winter season:

1. Feeling like you’re constantly pulling a Lizzie McGuire in your winter parka.

2. Wearing your hair down.

3. Trying to style clunky winter boots that go with absolutely none of your wardrobe.

4. Feeling like you’re losing touch with yourself because of your restrictive clothing choices every day.

5. Looking at spring clothing lines and getting very emotional.

6. When someone tells you they don’t need a winter parka to stay warm during the winter.

7. Sleeveless turtleneck sweater dresses.

8. You can’t even take online shopping anymore; every site’s winter clothing looks the same.

9. Looking at people managing to remain fashionable and being bitter about the warmth they’re choosing to sacrifice.

10. The painful moment you have every morning in front of the mirror in your leggings that you’ve worn for the past week.

11. When people who don’t live in a cold region tell you that winter fashion is the “best.”

I transferred to uOttawa in September of 2013 from the beautiful University of British Columbia. But don't let that introduction fool you, I'm from Nova Scotia.  I like dresses, I like the Toronto Raptors, I like Christmas, I like bread, I like online shopping, I like Mindy Kaling and I like penguins.
