I can count the number of times I’ve worn jeans to class this entire school year on one hand. That would also equate to the number of times I’ve actually put on makeup before going to class. Every single other time, I’ve worn workout clothes, sweat pants, leggings, and baggy t-shirts. You name any article of unflattering clothing a human can wear, and I can say that I’ve definitely worn it to class. You might be asking yourself, why on Earth would she do this?

Honestly, one reason is straight up laziness. I like to go to the gym right after class, and it’s much easier to just wear my clothes to class than worry about changing. Another more sophisticated reason is that I really could care less about dressing up, and here’s why:

This wonderful University that we go to is hard enough as is. Going to all the trouble to dress up and put make up on just makes it that much harder. I would much rather spend less time worrying about how I look and more time working on my coursework and participating in as many activities as possible. I think that even that little extra time I could be spending on worrying about what color jeans work with my favorite top, I’d rather be spending it getting ahead on coursework or getting coffee with another member of a student organization to plan events for the rest of the semester.

I hate to say it, but another big part of this has to do with boys. Nobody cares what boys wear to class. It’s totally acceptable for them to wear whatever they want; khakis, sweatpants, basketball shorts, button downs, t-shirts. This is because all their clothes look the same. So, why should girls be expected to do any different? Why should I feel like dressing up is going to be the end all, be all of going to class if boys don’t feel the same way? The day that boys are expected to wear khakis and nice button downs everyday to class is the day that I’ll stop wearing my workout clothes. Until then, I’m just going to keep shopping the Nike clearance rack rather than riffling through the J. Crew sale.

Rather than spending a few extra minutes in the morning focusing on my appearance, I spend those few extra minutes doing other productive things to make myself feel better. This is a personal choice I make. That being said, if you love dressing up for class, by all means do it! Do what makes you feel good, but don’t do it because you feel like you have to. Do it because those fifteen extra minutes will make you feel relaxed for the rest of the day. Don’t do it because you feel like your peers are going to look down on you if you don’t. If you’re feeling tired and making the choice, yoga pants are a girl’s best friend.

I'm from Atlanta, Georgia, but mind you I do not have a southern accent (even though I secretly want one). I'm currently pursuing a double major in History and Political Science (don't ask me if I'm going to Law School because I honestly don't even know what I'm eating for dinner). I love writing, reading, binge watching netflix, working out, eating, and most importantly I love hanging out with my friends. My life goal is to one day complete the Mount Nachissimo Nacho Eating challenge at Tio's.
