Why Grabbing Coffee with Friends is the Best Self-Care

This semester, I stepped into my new role as my sorority’s Wellness Specialist, and one of my key responsibilities is taking my sisters out for coffee—just to chat, check-in, and make sure they’re doing okay. I had no idea this simple task would become one of my favorite parts of my college experience.

With the chaos of being a college student, it’s often hard to find time to catch up with a friend or find time to hang out with someone new. Between classes, club meetings, internships, and the constant pressure to stay on top of things, finding even just 30 minutes to catch up with someone can feel like a luxury. But here’s what I have learned:Making that time makes all the difference.

For one, it creates space for you and your friend to be fully present. With no distractions pulling your attention away, just a real conversation to focus on. In these moments, I have had some of the most heartfelt and honest discussions, whether it’s about the stress of an upcoming exam, the excitement of a new opportunity, or just the little things that fill our daily lives. Plus, with my sorority being so big, these coffee chats have allowed me to meet and connect with sisters I barely knew before. Forming new friendships and connections with people I hadn’t talked to much has been amazing.

Beyond that, these coffee dates remind us that we’re not alone. College can feel isolating at times, even when surrounded by people. But sitting across from a friend, sipping lattes, and talking about anything and everything can be a powerful reminder that we’re all navigating this experience together.

And the best part? It doesn’t have to be coffee. Maybe it’s a quick walk around campus, a smoothie run, or a study break at your favorite spot. What matters is the intention behind it—the effort to pause, connect, and show up for each other.

So, if you’ve been meaning to catch up with a friend, take this as your sign to send that text. Grab a coffee, sit down, and just talk. You never know how much you both might need it.
