I’m not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I personally adore Valentine’s Day.

The red and pink theme, love in the air, hearts everywhere–I love it all. My shopping addiction has certainly not been curbed by the gorgeous Valentine’s Day drops that my favorite companies have been promoting. Skims released new shapewear in the prettiest light pink color that I am absolutely obsessed with, Victoria’s Secret released gorgeous lingerie sets, and Betsey Johnson released the cutest heart-shaped purses and accessories this year. And these are just a few, I could go on and on.

Scrolling through Instagram and looking at new Valentine’s Day collections online, all I can think about are my childhood fashion dreams. When I was younger, I was obsessed with pink. All of my clothing, toys, shoes, and accessories were pink and covered in glitter. As I grew older, my addiction faded, so when Valentine’s Day comes around, I’m enamored with all of the releases. I spend hours searching for my inner child’s dream items, such as a Louis Vuitton mini pink purse, a physical manifestation of the dream purse I wished for when I was a little girl.

Not only does Valentine’s Day make the little girl in me happy, planning and having Galentine’s Day parties also brings my friends and me so much joy. Every year, we have a Galentine’s Day party where we each bring a Valentine’s Day-themed dessert. We sit around, talking, eating, and enjoying each others’ company. Our outfits and decorations are all red, pink, and heart-themed embodying the great holiday. After the girls have Galentine’s Day, we either go on our separate dates or have dinner together. Either way, we have a great time getting to enjoy each other’s presence and eating delicious desserts, because, at the end of the day, Valentine’s Day is truly a holiday for the girls.

I also think the whole idea of having someone be your Valentine, or you being someone else’s, is adorable. It reminds me of when we were younger when we all had little childhood crushes. Making cute cards, preparing gifts for someone you love, and making the time to be with someone on a day like Valentine’s Day is such a cute concept to me–or maybe I’m just a hopeless romantic. Even so, I feel like the reason why I love Valentine’s Day is because it’s one of the only holidays where the entire day is ultimately centered around making your girlfriend happy and making her feel appreciated. In my opinion, that’s the way every day should be, but I feel like Valentine’s Day highlights it even more.

With that being said, I feel like Valentine’s Day sometimes gets a bad rep because it puts such an emphasis on love. I get it, Valentine’s Day, or any holiday for that matter, is hard to get through when you’re alone and it feels as though the entire world is throwing the fact that they have partners in your face. However, my suggestion is that we put a spin on that mindset and make the holiday about you and the girls. Have a Galentine’s Day party with your closest girlfriends, go treat yourself to a sweet treat like Dunkin’s heart-shaped donuts, or maybe buy yourself that cute pink purse that you’ve been eyeing for a while. At the end of the day, while I do love Valentine’s Day and love, the only person who can truly make you happy and satisfied is yourself. So, spend time with you, pamper yourself, and try to embrace the spirit of Valentine’s Day!
