Top 10 Things to Watch To Get Into The Halloween Mood

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

It’s that time of the year again! Halloween time! If you are like me, you are probably wondering what movies and TV shows to watch to get in the spirit. Maybe you want to throw a Halloween movie night for you and your friends, or maybe you are just looking for a new show to binge. Either way, I have gathered a list of some of my favorites that always get me into the fall spirit!

Harry Potter

Some may argue that the Harry Potter films are Christmas movies, as there is often snow and holiday singing in them, but it’s still safe to say that these are Halloween flicks- I mean it is a story about witches and wizards after all.

Casper

A sweet tale about a teenage girl’s friendship with a twelve-year-old ghost named Casper.

This is probably the most nostalgic selection on this list. I promise it will remind you of the times when you used to go out and trick or treat!

Beetlejuice

A Tim Burton “horror” film that follows a ghost couple who attempts to haunt the new owners of their home with none other than Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.

This is another Halloween staple everyone should watch. I have many fond memories of me watching this with my family!

Scream

This dark comedy/slasher film stars a variety of big names from Drew Barrymore to Skeet Ulrich and is guaranteed to be a fan favorite for years to come.

Whether you watch the first one, second one, third, and so on, you will definitely be put in the Halloween spirit. They always set these movies in the fall and often include a high school Halloween party!

The Addams Family

Gothic style? Monsters? Family Values? Say less.

This is the perfect movie to watch with your family. It is centered around this “creepy” family that seems to always be in the Halloween spirit. You can meet cool classic characters like Uncle Fester and Cousin It!

American Horror Story: Murder House

Ryan Murphy’s first season of his critically acclaimed anthology series will keep you up all night long with twelve frightening episodes.

This is my go to show for Halloween. Every fall I reach for the remote to turn on this season. **That plot twist at the end gets me EVERY TIME.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

If you love Riverdale and Ross Lynch, then you most definitely will enjoy Netflix’s dark take of Sabrina Spellman from the Archie Comics.

There are witches, the devil, and lots of fake blood. Join Sabrina and the rest of her friends from Baxter High as she navigates her life as a half-human half-witch.

Scream Queens

If you are spooked easily, then maybe AHS’ sister show is better suited for you. Follow Emma Roberts and Lea Michele terrorize the students of Wallace University.

What screams Halloween more than murderous college girls? Nothing. It’s a great quirky comedy to watch with your girlfriends.

Stranger Things

Follow a group of kids through life in their seemingly quiet town as they battle supernatural creatures and use superpowers.

If you have not already seen this Netflix hit series, now is the perfect time! It’s scary and heartwarming at the same time. And that Halloween episode will be a staple in the Halloween genre for years to come.

What We Do In The Shadows

This comedy show follows a group of vampire roommates as they live their best lives on Staten Island.

If you are like me, sometimes you are not always looking for something super scary. This is the perfect amount of spooky and funny that you and your friends will enjoy!

From horror essentials like American Horror Story to nosologic childhood classics like Casper, I guarantee that one of these selections will put you into the Halloween spirit.
