Single on Valentine’s Day? Throw a Party!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

Valentine’s Day is the hallmark-created holiday that can either leave us with a warm and tingly feeling of excitement about the day we are about to spend with a boyfriend, or that can leave us feeling sad and lonely. These feelings are unexplainable because every other day that college girls are single, it doesn’t feel that lonely. It is strange that February 14th can have such a large impact on our immediate lives. Yet, it does in the society that we live in. I choose to look at Valentines Day in a positive light, whether I am with someone or alone. For me, this day provides either a set day for a romantic date or a great excuse for an awesome themed party.

So if you are single this year, here are three cool ideas for a Valentines Day bash that will make you remember why being single can be so much fun:

A Crush Party: You and a group of friends anonymously invite two boys each to your Valentine’s Day soiree that night. Using invitations may sound a little “old school,” but it definitely adds a bit of a romantic feel to the party. Inviting two boys helps ensure that at least one will show up and if both do, the more the merrier. Make sure to tell the boys to dress up on the invitation. It is a fun addition if all the girls wear red dresses. With this type of party, decorations are key because otherwise it would just seem like another house party. Personally, I would avoid decorating with tons of hearts and red roses because remember, everyone coming is single. But, decking the house out in red and pink keeps the V-day theme alive. Cute ideas for finger food include items such as chocolate covered strawberries, red velvet cupcakes with white icing, and Sweet Tarts candies.

A Phases of Life Party: This a fun idea for a party that I have personally never gotten to try, but it sounds like a lot of fun. This party allows you and your friends to cover the “dating scene” through marriage and divorce in one night! And it allows you to have a variety of different drinks throughout the night, which always makes a good college party. All of the guys put their ties in a box and when the girls enter the party, they pick a tie. The owner of the tie is going to be your partner for the night. The party has 6 phases, but feel free to cut it short where you want to. Remember to always drink responsibly and even if the whole party doesn’t stop, it is okay for you to stop.

Phase 1—“The Dating Phase” begin with drinking low budget beer
Phase 2—“The Engagement Phase” serve cocktails
Phase 3—“The Marriage Phase” serve champagne in crystal champagne flutes (Champagne flutes always make a party seem sophisticated)
Phase 4—“The Honeymoon Phase” serve the popular cocktail “Sex on the Beach”
Phase 5—“The Kids”. Each couple rolls the dice to see how many “babies” they have. Numbers 1-6 means you had a boy and you have to have a blue Jell-O-shot and numbers 7-12 means a girl and you have to have a red Jell-O-shot
Phase 6—“Divorce” For those who are ambitious, a shot of Jack Daniels is suggested. I would suggest that only the boys take this one!

An Anti-Valentine’s Day: If you are more of the cynical type and don’t want to celebrate the traditional V-Day holiday with your other single friends, the anti-Valentine’s Day party is definitely the party for you. Invite all your friends as if it was a regular house party, but remember to tell everyone not to wear red or pink. Also, remember to avoid decorations such as hearts and roses. At the party have fun cocktails such as apple martinis and cosmos.  A party addition that your freshly single friend may enjoy is a heart piñata. Even though we are not kids anymore, piñatas are not totally lame if you fill it with all the typical Valentine’s Day items such as small teddy bears, hearts, and chocolate. This is both a good stress reliever and a fun party activity for later in the night.
