Semester Recap: Favorite Things

As we conclude the school year, I thought it would be nice to reflect on this semester! I want to share some of my favorites (both niche and popular) things I’ve discovered or returned to. These are my highlights after a busy day. I hope this list inspires you to make the most of the remaining days and find some balance during finals.

Group X Classes

If you know me, you know that I cannot stop talking about this lately. For your information, Michigan Recreation offers Group X classes, which are fitness sessions ranging from intense cardio workouts to relaxing yoga. You can select various classes from a schedule which includes both virtual and in-person options, or you can purchase an unlimited pass! Such a steal if you ask me.

After discovering this new way of exercising, I invited my friends, and it has been such a fun experience! We really enjoyed spending time together in this way. I wish I had found out about it earlier, though. There’s something special about exercising alongside others; it feels more exciting and empowering. Besides, every instructor I’ve interacted with has been extremely supportive. They offer modifications, which is helpful for me as a former couch potato. Out of all the classes I’ve attended, I recommend Pilates and Zumba the most.

Matcha Runs

A few months ago, when a friend asked me whether I preferred matcha or coffee, my immediate answer was coffee. However, my preferences have shifted recently as I’ve been experimenting with various flavors of matcha, including mango, earl grey, and guava. I also like visiting shops like UniTea Cafe and Bun Chai between classes. Somehow, I feel more productive after that daily matcha. Maybe it’s because of the change in scenery. If you ask me again, I’d say my choice between coffee and matcha is balanced now. It’s just so tough to choose.

PodCasts While Commuting

I’ve never been a huge fan of podcasts in the past, but this semester, I started to really enjoy them. They’re convenient since I can listen while brushing my teeth or even lying in bed. It’s always cool to learn new things (Yes, I’m proudly channeling my inner nerd!). This semester, I’ve been binging a podcast called The Psychology of Your 20s, hosted by Jemma Sbeg. I highly recommend it, because it explores the biggest transitions in our 20s and provides practical psychology tips. Jemma speaks at the perfect pace, making the content accessible without being overly technical, and she offers evidence-based, relatable advice. It’s like listening to an older sister!

Neutral Nails

Last year, whenever I searched for nail inspiration, I was drawn to holiday themed ones or cat-eyes, but recently that has changed. Pastel and nude nails suit me better, and I feel more comfortable wearing them. Occasionally, I opt for clear nails to allow my natural nails recover. For other accessories, I have also realized that less is more. Instead of stacking necklaces or doing full curls everyday, looking organized and clean became my top priority. It’s a reminder to focus on what fits our personal styles rather than following trends.

Getting Into a Morning Routine

This term, I had my first 8 a.m. class in college. Admittedly, it was extremely challenging for a night owl like me. Despite that, every time I showed up, I felt a sense of accomplishment and had no regrets. Getting ready really set the tone for my entire day. On days when I don’t have obligations, I tend to wake up much later, but I still make an effort to start my mornings with something productive. While 8 a.m. classes are still not my cup of tea, they have surprisingly helped me establish a solid routine. I even caught a few beautiful sunrises this winter!

Looking back, these little favorites carried me through the highs, lows, and everything in between this semester. Looking forward, I hope next semester brings even more to love.

Hi! My name is Lisa, and I'm a sophomore at UMich studying Cognitive Science & Linguistics. Outside of classes, I'm a coffee enthusiast. My favorite drink changes often, but right now, it's an iced shaken espresso. I also enjoy hiking and doing yoga. When I'm not outdoors, you can find me binging K-dramas or learning a new song on the piano.

I'm excited to be a part of Her Campus!
