Resolved Here: Your Fat Tuesday Cravings!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

When it comes to the long-celebrated holiday of Fat Tuesday, there is one obvious way that thousands of people choose to celebrate in Ann Arbor and all around the country—eating a paczki (pronounced: punch-kee for those of you who are not from the Midwest). In the past, paczkis were made to use up all of the lard, sugar, eggs, and fruit in one’s house that they couldn’t eat during Lent.  Today, paczkis are jelly or cream filled donuts, so they are a little more appetizing than the ones made hundreds of years ago!

In Ann Arbor, there are several excellent places to solve your paczki cravings this Fat Tuesday, or to try one if you have never before!

Dimo’s Deli and Donuts, 2030 W. Stadium Bvd.
While this deli and bakery is a little far off campus, it is definitely worth the hike. Dimo’s is a family operated business and has been making paczkis since 1973!

Washtenaw Dairy, 602 S. Ashley St.
Right downtown, a brisk walk from central campus, is the Washtenaw Dairy. Known for fresh ice cream, this Ann Arbor dairy also makes paczkis this time of year! Be sure to check ‘em out if you are looking to try a local Ann Arbor favorite and a polish classic in one stop!

Zingerman’s Bakehouse, 3711 Plaza Dr.
If you want the best of the best, head to Ann Arbor’s own: Zingerman’s. And paczkis are no exception! For these homemade specialties, Zingerman’s uses traditional fillings of plum and rose jam, raspberry preserves, vanilla custard, or sweetened cream cheese.

The University of Michigan Polish Club, Angell Hall Posting Wall, Chemistry Atrium, and Dunderstadt/Pierpont Connector
There’s no excuse not to get a paczki with this opportunity! Although these may not be coming fresh out of the oven from a local bakery, this sale through the University of Michigan Polish Club is the easiest way to get your hands on a paczki! They will be selling in three locations on campus from 10am to 4pm. For more information, see their event on Facebook!

While all of these fabulous options sound delicious, there is one thing that often moves people away from trying one of these delectable donuts: the calories. An average paczki can run up to 450! They don’t call it “Fat Tuesday” for nothing! However, this once-a-year holiday is worth the splurge. Make it a date with your girlfriends: order a few different filling flavors and have a taste test! It’s fewer calories than eating an entire donut and it’s quality bonding time with your girls! Whatever you decide to do, don’t miss out on this Midwest treat!
