How to Decipher Between Hot or Iced Coffee

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

For me it has always been coffee that sets the mood for the day. Like most people say, “I’m not awake until I’ve had my coffee, latte, or dirty chai.” But, really though, how does one decide whether to get iced or hot coffee? It sets the tone for the day. If my morning coffee doesn’t give me that replenishing feeling I am looking for, the rest of my day goes down the drain. Throughout my few, but plentiful years of drinking coffee I have learned the rules of when to get an iced or hot coffee

Rule 1: Wait until you arrive at the coffee shop to order. Before walking to my favorite local coffee shop in my hometown, Leland Michigan at MadCap coffee, or in my college town, AnnArbor Michigan where I’ll usually go to Vertex coffee, I always wait until I arrive in the coffee shop to feel out what the vibe is for the day.

Rule 2: Coffee taste depends on weather. In the warmer seasons I usually enjoy a nice refreshment that cools me off.  While in the winter seasons sometimes I lean toward more of a warm coffee. The weather in Michigan as we all know is something that you can never predict. To draw back to rule 1 I have also learned over the past winter to wait until I got to the coffee shop to order, due to the fact that my winter jackets are sometimes a little too warm. After hauling myself in the snow or wind to a small coffee shop that is crowded, it feels like the heat is attacking me even though it is cold out. So I then order an iced coffee. The problem with ordering an iced coffee in the cold is that if you grab it on the go and don’t have mittens then your hands turn cold. And if you have a hot coffee and your long superpuff on you overheat. In most circumstances of weather rule 2 has worked though.

Rule 3: Will the coffee I am ordering in taste and temperature fulfill my caffeine taste buds. My daily coffee is a reward for me, usually it is my motivation and reward to study, or a drink to sip on during my daily hot girl walk to keep me cool or warm. Coffee is most people’s reward for the day.

I advise that you follow these rules 1,2,3 and anymore that you come around throughout your coffee country. Authentic coffee drinkers know that it’s not just a cup of coffee but a piece of your day you always look forward to. Don’t let the wrong coffee order ruin it.
